Dogs in cars again

FuckyouCovid21 · 14/06/2021 14:34

Seriously when will people learn?! On our local FB group today, another dog had to rescued from a car because the owner had gone to the hairdressers. Why oh why would you take a dog out in the car in hot weather unless you really need to but to leave it in a car when you go to the hairdressers/shopping etc.? Beggars beliefs

When the fuck will people learn?

This makes me so angry.

I'm not even taking my dog out of the house in this weather. She much prefers being left indoors to lie on the cool brick hall floor. Cars in this weather beggars belief.

randomkey123 · 14/06/2021 16:28

There's a couple in our village with a bearded collie that they were walking yesterday at midday.

It's so fucking cruel, I personally think dogs should be removed from the owners as what message is it sending?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2021 16:29

What cars other than Tesla have dog mode? And did Tesla fix theirs properly?

My dog is in my car most days. Yes, he is parked in shade and left whilst I work. Windows cracked open, tail gate vent in place, always parked in deep shade, cool pad, water and apples available, regularly checked.

He has never over heated. Today we went out in the car specifically to cool down. Air con in the car, none in the house. So out we went for some inessential shopping and a colder hour or two.

I'm not saying everyone takes as much care, but not every dog left in a car is being ignored or put at risk. It is possible to do it sensibly and safely.

Spidey66 · 14/06/2021 16:30

Some people don't have the sense they were born with.

Our dog goes in the car when we are taking her on holiday or a trip to the beach or something. The window is always. Open and we take breaks every couple of hours. We don't take her on unnecessary trips an definitely don't leave her in the car.....why would you?

Dogs can't open a window, get some water, take off their coat or ring you to ask you to come back cos you're too hot.

Ostryga · 14/06/2021 16:32

@TheGumption

It disgusts me. Should be banned from keeping pets for life.
I completely agree.

Imagine if someone left their child in a boiling hot car? They’d be arrested (or at least I hope so. It’s the parent/owner of a dog responsibility to ensure their safety.

The fact dog owners just get a telling off makes me furious.

It's not a specific "Dog mode" in my car: it's a feature that allows me to run the aircon (or heating in winter) remotely even if the car is locked and the engine is off and I can control it from an app on my phone. I don't know if it's unique to electric vehicles, but I think it will be pretty mainstream before too long.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2021 16:39

Ah. Electric cars. That makes sense. I was busy looking for one, I'll add it to my wishlist for my next car.

Thanks.

ChrisOnTheBeach · 14/06/2021 16:54

To be fair, the amount of dogs in cars in an electric car in 'dog mode' are going to be hugely rare, compared to dogs just left in hot cars.

There is a bit of 'NADOALT-ary' going on here. (Not-all-dog-owners-are-like-that.) Grin So, whilst there are a small number of people who will leave their dog in a climate controlled electric car, this will not be the case for the majority who do it.

I literally know just 2 people with an electric car, so the amount of people who own them at the moment is not great.

That said, if someone DOES have climate control, and doggo is happy as pig in muck in said electric car, then there should be some kind of notice on the car, so that people know the animal isn't suffering.

Also, playing devil's advocate, for every twatstain who leaves their dog in a hot car, there are 1000 dog owners who would never do it. (Thank God!!!) As the vast VAST majority of dog owners are responsible and sensible, and love their pooches. Grin

Having a window open doesn’t stop a car from being hot!!

True. It will help a bit, but very little.
Adarajames · 14/06/2021 17:16

I leave my dogs in my van at times, when we’re away in it for 4* weeks at a time, I sometimes have to. But I do have a special temperature monitor that texts me the temperature regularly so I can return to the vehicle quickly if it starts to get anywhere near a hot temperature. Also the van is far more insulated than a car, and so can be kept much cooler with various heat screens / vent locks etc etc.

frankie001 · 14/06/2021 17:19

I can lock my car with air con still on, but only do this when paying for petrol. Would never leave my girl in a car.

FuckyouCovid21 · 14/06/2021 17:20

Totally agree. 22 degrees outside for example can reach 47 degrees inside regardless of whether a window is left open

Kpo58 · 14/06/2021 17:22

Ooh that is interesting, I've never heard of a 'dog mode'. Perhaps a rear window sticker that explains the Dog Mode is active would be a good idea?

It would be good if it was compulsory to have a sticker on the inside of the back windscreen which could colour change to show how hot it was inside the car. That way people would know without breaking into cars if it was a safe temperature inside.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2021 17:24

If you can get a boot lock, called a vent lock, you can get a bit of a breeze, as the boot is lower than the windows convection does it for you.

Lying a wet towel in the door helps too.

But it doesn't work for long and you need to return regularly and run the air con when needed. But the inside of my car is usually cooler than outside when I use it.

TruelyonelastSchlep · 14/06/2021 17:24

Some people are fuckwits and should be banned from ever owning a pet.

In fact I am thinking bringing back town square stocks could be the answer. If you leave a dog in a car on a hot day. Then you go in the stocks on a hot day for the same amount of time.

Dobbyafreeelf · 14/06/2021 17:35

I've got a tailgate and a boot lock thing plus have all windows down if the dogs need to be in the car in this weather. Getting up an hour earlier at the moment to walk them before it warms up to much. It's not rocket science to keep them safe.

I did however get shouted at in a service station car park in the pouring rain last month for leaving the dogs in the car mind! 🙄 it was 14 degrees, raining and very windy. I just popped in to use the loo was gone 6 minutes. I had opened windows but this couple saw fit to go absolutely mental at me. I got in the car and put a cardigan on it was so cold!!!

MadeOfStarStuff · 14/06/2021 17:35

I think people are so used to their air conditioned cars that they have no concept of how hot it would be in the car without it. And people are very very stupid.

I’m not sure what their excuse for ignoring the publicity around the issue every single summer is though. How on earth anyone can own a dog they presumably care about and leave it to bake to death I will never understand.

They definitely should be banned for keeping pets for life and I wouldn’t mind them losing their driving licence as well since they clearly can’t be trusted with a car.

pepsicolagirl · 14/06/2021 17:43

we have had our dog 1 month. Turns out that shes a lockdown pup (11mnths old - we are her 3rd home) who does NOT like to be left alone at home.
She cries the entire time we are gone (I have cameras) ..so to cut a long story short, we don't leave her alone right now.
Luckily we both WFH so we can schedule ourselves so that there is always someone with her.
Anyway, my point is that even though she HATES being at home alone but according to her previous owner (who I have been chatting with on whats app since we took her in) is happy as larry in a car while he used to do his errands. I still would never take her out and leave her in a car. Its a fucking stupid thing to do on a none hot day never mind the temps we are seeing at the moment!!

I cut my own hair so I didn't have to go to a hairdressers Blush

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2021 17:59

Dobby I think many people forget that in cold weather your car acts like a fridge and then you have to work at keeping dogs warm enough!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2021 18:34

Maybe 'my girl's refers to a bitch Jedi !!!

Chloemol · 14/06/2021 18:51

It really upsets me to see this. Took mine to the vets yesterday, they collect from the car, take them in, bring them back, you go in to pay. I took mine with me, a number in the car park didn’t, left them in the hot cars whilst they went in

It’s wrong

Chloemol · 14/06/2021 18:53

For lots of people dogs are their children. For lots of reasons and my girl refers to a female dog, so dont be so nasty

@TheQueef

There is a vid in the mail today. Police breaking the window and some woman shouted at them.

How can anyone not know now?

The video is now joined by what is apparently the same couple, blagging free food and stealing from the tips jar at a local cafe.
