Cutting foot callous

TheDiddlyGang · 13/06/2021 15:20

Why is it so frowned upon?

Soaking, filing and creaming does absolutely nothing!
The only solution is to carefully cut them off no?

Yet the NHS and Podiatrists say you mustn’t ever cut them.

I use my pedi pro on mine and it works well!

TheDiddlyGang · 13/06/2021 15:29

Like a ped egg?
I didn’t rate mine tbh.

I feel this thread could easily end up in the "stupid accidents you have had" thread which is also trending!

No it’s battery operated so is a lot more effective - It just files it down nicely. I’m a runner so I get a lot of callouses and I’ve been doing this safely for a few years.

jimmyhill · 13/06/2021 15:35

Sounds like a good way to replace one problem with another, worse, one

ToffeePennie · 13/06/2021 15:38

Please NO!
Simply cutting callus will not solve the issue, damage the soft tissues in the foot and cause major foot related issues. It simply destroys your feet. Not to mention you don’t know how far to go, so it will likely result in you cutting yourself and further destroying the tissues to that part of the foot.
I am a foot health practitioner. Please please get a professional in. There is a reason we have intensive training!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/06/2021 15:39

OP, because it takes a lot of training for the correct removal of callus, and you can do yourself alot of harm doing it yourself, and make your situation worse. You can try and do most things yourself, but i can guarantee a professional trained to do the job properly will make a better job then you.

I used to do this when I was younger and had tougher skin on my feet - it was the most effective way. Somehow my feet don’t get as bad as they used to do so I don’t do it (although I did use nail scissors to cut a little lump off yesterday!)

ShowMeTheSugar · 13/06/2021 15:43

If you get a medical pedicure from a professional they can safely do this for you. I get one once or twice a year and then the superdrug foot file at home keeps my hoofs in check.

bonzo77 · 13/06/2021 15:46

No idea. But I’ve been doing mine with a corn plane for years. Just 2 pads of very very hard / thick skin on the balls / soles of my feet, one by my little toes and another bu the next toe along. Smooth it off with a Chiropody sponge. Never cut myself. As a teenager I’d do it perfectly successfully with a craft knife (!). Generally the sponge alone as good enough to keep them in check.

MagicSummer · 13/06/2021 16:51

OP - I used to have the most awful thick hard skin on the balls of my feet. It was so thick I had no feeling in that skin at all, and I admit I did resort to cutting off large chunks every now and then. I always used masses of moisturiser afterwards and it was more comfortable. I guess it is not the most sensible thing to do! However, a glimmer of hope for you - after years of suffering with the hard skin, I gave up wearing heels and tights, and several years later the skin on the balls of my feet is soft and smooth with no hard bits! I also get a pedicure every month just to keep them in good condition. So although I am sure the professionals advise against cutting, it can work out OK!

Please see a professional if your callus is getting painful. Doing it yourself could end up with a trip to casualty.
