WIBU to cook a chicken with a date of 11th on it?

OP posts:
IronTeeth · 13/06/2021 16:17

@MilduraS

Not chicken but I ate some Quorn "chicken pieces" that were a day out of date years ago. I haven't been able to eat anything past it's use by date since then. I was horrendously sick.
It wasnt the fact they were a day out of date - they were either stored badly, or contaminated by something else
ThursdayWeld · 13/06/2021 16:18

I would. I doubt I would even have noticed the date Grin If it doesn't smell bad, cook it.

fishonabicycle · 13/06/2021 16:30

And I totally don't understand what the weather has to do with it! I'm pretty sure the OP isn't keeping her chicken in the garden (unless it's still alive?).

Sparklesocks · 13/06/2021 16:33

If it smelled ok I probably would. I’d also probably cook it for slightly longer.

ThursdayWeld · 13/06/2021 17:49

@worriedaboutN

The 11th ? And in this weather 😬

That’s just going to be chicken flavour bowel prep

This is hilarious. Do you not think that the OP has a fridge?! Grin
worriedaboutN · 14/06/2021 14:41

Haha no I’m assuming op does but what about when it was purchased - it’s been warm for a while was it put away quickly enough, plus there are so many flies everywhere at the moment I just wouldn’t risk it

where are you that there are flies?

i'm UK south coast, and none here

worriedaboutN · 14/06/2021 17:25

London and having terrible issues.
Heard my neighbour shouting the other day too about flies in her house. Relatives in Essex and herts having same issue and we can’t find a source.
I’ve had to but mesh food covers etc it’s an absolute nightmare

MadeOfStarStuff · 14/06/2021 17:27

Definitely not. I really wouldn’t risk chicken.

But if the chicken had been left out for too long before being refrigerated, it would smell bad regardless of the date on the packaging.

I still don't understand what flies have to do with the chicken seeing as it's been stored in sealed fridge?!

LakieLady · 14/06/2021 17:32

If it looked and smelt ok, I'd eat it. However, I have cast iron guts and have only had an upset stomach twice in my (nearly) 66-year life.

FizzyPink · 14/06/2021 17:34

I wouldn’t. I’ve done it before and then not enjoyed the meal because I’m worrying I’ve poisoned myself.

Full disclaimer - I’m emetophobic and have twice been hospitalised with food poisoning so I’m probably a lot more wary than a normal person might be!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 17:36

where are you that there are flies?

Literally all over the planet. Actually maybe not in arctic areas, but everywhere else. Including all over uk...

Shoppingwithmother · 14/06/2021 17:38

I’m pretty relaxed about dates, but not with chicken. I don’t think I’d go more than one day over the use by date for chicken.
And that’s speaking as someone who last night made macaroni cheese out of 2 litres of UHT milk (bought for lockdown 1emergency!!) which was best before October 2020...

Rmka · 14/06/2021 17:46

The bacteria that can cause food poisoning doesn't necessarily smell, so I wouldn't risk it. And definitely not if children, elderly or pregnant were to eat it.

The comment, "so many" indicates a large number of, I have not seen more than 1 or 2 recently

SticksAndStoned · 15/06/2021 08:04

Question where are you that there are flies?

Answer Literally all over the planet

That's a neat trick! 😉

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/06/2021 08:46

It's june. There are many flies everywhere. I can comment on NW England with many (as usual in summer) flies, mum is moaning about them in central europe.
Omg and ants. Now these and aphids bread like crazy this year. But back to flies.

Flies aren’t in your fridge though?

Does no one buy meat from the butchers anymore? Never had a use by date because it’s arbitrary. Use your senses and common being one of them.
