To think it's really hard to get a decent haircut these days?

Have noticed recently that any hairdressers I've been to don't seem to be able to give a decent cut anymore.

I have dyed blonde hair (full head, half, T bar every six weeks) and my last two hair dressers have been amazing with my colour!

I can't seem to get a decent cut though, since leaving my home town a number of years ago I've tried so many hairdressers but can't seem to find a decent one and am now wondering if the techniques taught in training college have changed so much I'll never get a good cut again.

I remember growing up the hairdresser would "lift" the hair cutting off all the dead ends and then thin out the hair blow dry then go round and chop the ends. Now no matter how I ask for my hair to be done they all comb the hair straight then cut round the ends and that's it.

I've tried talking through what I want as my hair is a lot thicker at the back and needs cut into and evened out but no one seems to get me.

Does anyone else feel like this? I'm not even sure I'm explaining it right but it feels like even though I've found a hairdresser who is fab with colour the cut doesn't seem as important anymore?

@Rosebud21

If any if you who have good hairdressers live in London, please give me their details Thanks
i used to go to one in Spitalfields, they were good! It feels a bit too far away post-lockdown, it was easy to get to from work but would be ages on the Overground from home. I'm trying a new one on Friday.

I'm another one with curly hair, and I totally agree that lots of hairdressers can only do one thing! It's so frustrating, I like my curls and I don't want them straightened out.

I've gone to a local salon for 2 years, same girl cutting my hair. When it was shoulder length, it was fine but now I've gone shorter, it's a disaster. She does that awful scissor thinning after she's dried it, and I end up with wonky layers that I can't get to sit without straightening.

I had it cut last weekend, and after asking for it being more like a graduated bob so longer at front and cut into the nape, I came home with a triangle bob that's since gone up 2 inches.....and I look like Lord effing Farquad. She didn't cut anything other than the ends/shape. I had to buy some thinning scissors from Amazon and hack into it myself as it wouldn't even tuck behind my ears. £55 that cut cost.

So now comes the hunt for another salon......... any tips for Gloucestershire gratefully received.

@OneStepOneStumble

I have definitely found this recently. My hair basically styles itself if I have layers cut into it throughout buy no hairdressers anywhere seems to know how or want to do layering anymore. They always cut it into the long straight ends that is in fashion no matter how I explain it. I know layering might not be in vogue but it's how I want it done and I wish they'd not choose my style based on whether its fashionable or not ...
I could have written this. The amount of times I explain I want layers and am given a flat bob drives me nuts. I then insist on layers and they get huffy.

The best ones I've found have trained overseas. I currently go somewhere where most of the stylists are German, those who aren't have learnt their skills from them.

@PenCreed I can get there easily, what's the name of the salon? Thank you

PenCreed · 13/06/2021 19:00

It’s called Pimps & Pinups. Terrible name, but there are some great stylists!

My hairdresser is amazing - I’ve been going to her for around 11-12 years! I have curly hair and she really gets it - mine is layered and cut into and therefore has shape, but she knows how much my hair will spring when dry. She is not cheap but I’m not fussed - I have to cope with my hair every day. No where near anywhere mentioned though!

Rosebud21 · 13/06/2021 19:15

Shocking name Grin thanks for the info @PenCreed

PickAChew · 13/06/2021 19:23

I was going to say that mine gives a good cut (I have very thick, wavy hair and have been burnt so many times in the past) but then I remembered that she's almost as old as I am so definitely didn't go to college recently!

Yanbu. I've tried endless hairdressers recommended by friends/colleagues etc
They all seem to
a) be rubbish at blow drying. I warn them my hair has a bit of natural wave but that I want it styled straight, then they insist upon trying to tousle it dry messily with fingers while blow drying, struggle with it getting odd little waves in and resort to using straighteners and product. I walk out with it flat as a pancake and no shape.i want it properly blow dried, layer by layer with a round brush
b) rubbish with thinner hair. Ive got fine blonde hair but there's enough of it - this doesn't mean you cannot cut any shape in! It does mean weird choppy layers just look mess.
c) they seem totally unable to discuss styles/recommend. I used to go to a guy as a teen, he would discuss your face shape, hair texture and thickness, features etc and suggest options to suit. I havent found anyone since who does this well!

One of the stylists where I go also works there!

My hairdresser is fab , and so are all the others in her salon , never seen a bad haircut from any of them , and I do realise how lucky I am

I've had one haircut in the last 20 months and I found a new stylist as I felt the salon I'd gone to for 12 years had the real feel of a conveyor belt system and lockdown made me break that habit and become more discerning.

I absolutely struck gold. The new stylist is massively experienced and took the time to assess my hair thoroughly and me plus my lifestyle and my home effort. She explained how she was going to cut my hair, the technical name and technique and gave me a full low down on shampoo, products, lots of drying and styling tips with a demonstration. I am absolutely over the moon with the cut in the month since and can't wait to go back again. My hair feels and looks a million dollars and it's very 'me' Over and above that she said I don't need to colour my hair as it's 'very pretty' and approved my choice of home shampoo and conditioner, although she said not to use much conditioner as I don't need it. That's a refreshing change from the big up-sell. It's given me a huge boost in every way. I think she's a genius.

This experience was a massively sharp contrast to a fairly recent thread on here where a poster paid an arm and a leg for a cut and colour and felt ripped off and an Insta page raving about a salon where every single finished hair looked identical except for about four shades colour variation and one, just one, was about 2" shorter.

Can you tell I'm on cloud 9 about it all?
