Kids scootering in the road making a racket

They are from a small block of new build flats nearby (flats are visible from our upstairs windows, I’ve seen the kids go in and out). I get it’s annoying not to have a garden but they’re using the road and pavements instead, no adults in sight!

Aged about 10 to 5, a group of 6 or 7 children. The youngest was riding his scooter up and down the middle of the road for an hour, wearing nothing but boxers, being chased by an older girl on a bike! Then 2 boys fighting and hitting each other over the head with branches.

They hang around on the pavement right next to our garden wall, screeching, shouting and bickering all day.

Should I suck it up or send a letter to the flats asking them to keep a closer eye on their children and reduce the noise?

It’s a quiet, peaceful rural area apart from these kids treating the road and pavement like a park.

There’s a proper park less than 10 minutes walk away.

I was tempted to go out and speak to them (especially when they were fighting with branches!)

The only time I’ve seen adults around is in the mornings, they stand in the car park by the flats in their dressing gowns chatting and smoking.

WWYD?

OMG seriously? That is funny (and rubbish)

“I work in housing and this is half my inbox every day.

Interestingly often from the same people who think 'kids of today' should have less tech and play outside more. hmm”

It is.

And some of the words they use to describe the children are, frankly, unbelievably ugly. And the parents but I mind less when it's adults. Often the loungewear and smoking is mentioned.

Possibly someone was a script somewhere.

WildWestWanda · 13/06/2021 16:15

Did you seriously never play out as a child?

MiltonRoad · 13/06/2021 16:18

Throwing snails at people is really unpleasant much worse than a few children playing

SmallPrawnEnergy · 13/06/2021 16:20

We are in the country, and it’s not an estate, just some flats that look newly built
Can almost sense the outrage that these scummers with their dressing gowns and fags and hoards if kids are really bringing down the naice countryside Hmm

StacysMomMandyJessiesEx · 13/06/2021 16:21

i find it interesting that the smoking adults in the car park only seem to come out in the morning to smoke....so a one a day habit?

i dont smoke, never have. but my experience is that smokers usually have a few a day, never just the one....so would be out, smoking, and supervising...no?

Indiana2021 · 13/06/2021 16:21

Not really sure why this is relevant?

I was pointing out they’re unsupervised during the daytime, so I can’t talk to the parents. Also that there is no garden just a car park.

No you weren't. You were judging them for standing outside chatting and smoking in their dressing gowns.

Lolwhat · 13/06/2021 16:22

YABU it’s kids being kids, if you don’t like it move to the ass end of nowhere :)

LotLessBovver · 13/06/2021 16:22

I think the snail-throwing is far more unpleasant than having children playing out in the street.

Nohomemadecandles · 13/06/2021 16:24

Must admit my mum’s had a nice half hour picking snails off our clematis and hurling them over the wall in the direction of the racket (wall is about 12 feet so can’t see over). It’s gone a bit quieter now so perhaps they got the message!

That is truly awful behaviour. Annoying kids is one thing. Cruel adults is another.

Don’t know why it’s relevant either that the flats are newbuild.

YABU - children have got to play somewhere, especially if they live in a flat and there’s not much space.

RickJames · 13/06/2021 16:26

Poor snails! I know they are just snails but they will have died horrible deaths with their shells all smashed up. I'll take dressing gowned, gossiping smokers over people who use living things as missiles any day. What is that teaching your children about respect for others?

There are more humane methods to kill snails and slugs. Google it.

Livelovebehappy · 13/06/2021 16:29

Op, you’re right, they should play at the park if only 10 mins away. We used to have a very small garden, and if my DCs wanted to play football, I would tell them to walk to the park and not be a nuisance to neighbours.

ginoclocksomewhere · 13/06/2021 16:30

You sound like a snob.

I've never heard of someone NOT playing in the street as a kid.

VainAbigail · 13/06/2021 16:33

You sound old fashioned and snooty.

AwFeebs · 13/06/2021 16:34

Also if you think it is bad now OP wait until the 6 week holidays.. Wink

SofiaMichelle · 13/06/2021 16:38

@MrsTerryPratchett

I work in housing and this is half my inbox every day.

Interestingly often from the same people who think 'kids of today' should have less tech and play outside more. Hmm

I must say, that sounds a bit odd.

You get people writing to complain about the noise of kids playing and then the same people write to tell you they think kids should play outside more?

OP you never played outside as a child? I am baffled

rooarsome · 13/06/2021 17:34

YABU and from your update about the snails you sound deeply unpleasant.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 13/06/2021 17:41

Don't ask my why, but I think the addition of the clematis was the bit that tipped it into parody for me.

lakesummer · 13/06/2021 17:44

A grown adult pelting small dc with snails?

I am struggling to imagine any situation where someone would actually behave like that.

If your mum actually did this then she is by far the worst behaved person in the group.

Me too! Takes time away from helping people that have real problems doesn't it? Grin
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/06/2021 17:55

@SofiaMichelle feel free to assume I'm lying.

People who don't work in housing would be stunned at the level of random unreasonableness there is.

My job's never boring though. I'd love to write a book but never would.

everybodysang · 13/06/2021 17:56

You sound absolutely awful and YABU. Maybe if your horrible snail throwing mother had let you play outside when you were a kid you might have a more reasonable view on the situation.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/06/2021 17:57

@Sargass0

Me and you. Book deal. No one would believe a word.
