Hi, I have recently become unemployed after leaving my job (stressful environment / manager was a bully). I've only been out of work for just over a month now and applying for lots of jobs. I'm not fussy so will take on anything just to pay the bills. I'm hoping I can start a course with OU soon anyway but still need work.

I had an appointment booked last week which was cancelled the day before and rearranged for today (they don't check with you first, just give you the time and date via text message). Bit annoying but oh well. Arrived at my appointment today. Work coach is quite young, only a few years older than myself I would say. He seemed quite blasé about everything, just slumped in his chair. I mentioned in chat that I had an appointment arranged for last week but it was cancelled and his response was "oh yeah that was with me but I called in sick, I couldn't be bothered to come in". Hmm.

He also asked me what jobs I'd applied for recently, I gave him some examples, one being a local nursery (worked in a nursery a few years ago so have plenty of experience). His response was "lots of people are applying for that one, don't get your hopes up" Shock. I'm not the type to complain, but AIBU in thinking his attitude is awful? Surely he should be encouraging, positive etc. I hope it's not just me, but I've noticed how some job centre staff look down on unemployed people/job seekers. Maybe they should start looking at their own staff.

Was that a business coach with the job centre? Make a complaint

Moonshine11 · 11/06/2021 20:03

Yes I’d complain

funinthesun19 · 11/06/2021 20:05

It’s like one extreme to the other isn’t it?

To be honest though, I’d rather have him any day than the ones who look down on people.

InnaBun · 11/06/2021 20:07

I'd complain then he can lose his job and someone who can be bothered can have it

sandgrown · 11/06/2021 20:09

The problem is that due to the pandemic DWP made a commitment to take on 13,000 new work coaches . They have been hastily recruited, many from other fields of work, and so have not yet had time to build up their skills . If you are unhappy ask to be given another work coach .

Mickymouse7 · 11/06/2021 20:12

@wanderedlonelyasacloud yes, a work coach with the job centre

Obviously being unemployed isn't great and I've had a lot of financial worries recently. It would of been nice if he had taken me seriously. He clearly just didn't want to be there.

How about applying to be a work coach?

Doesn't sound as if he will be there much longer, so that would be at be easy one vacancy l.

Mickymouse7 · 11/06/2021 20:24

@funinthesun19 oh me too, he was easy to talk to, very relaxed (probably too relaxed). Very immature though and I came away from the meeting feeling really deflated

@FinallyHere funnily enough I have looked into it but a lot of their jobs are temporary, not permanent

I would totally agree with what you say about job centre staff looking down on unemployed people. I was once unemployed for 8 soul destroying months and I thought I was imagining it but the day I announced I’d been offered a job I immediately noticed the change. They should definitely be nicer to people.
SleepyPartyTime · 11/06/2021 21:06

Bloody hell, definitely complain. It sounds like you have experience in the work place and are proactive anyway but this service might be absolutely essential for someone with less confidence and his attitude is dreadful!

Mickymouse7 · 11/06/2021 21:07

@HotChocolateLover exactly! It could happen to anyone, especially over the last year with covid. So many people have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

IME job centre staff have no idea. Telling someone 45 yrs old with a degree to go for jobs in Tesco etc. Retail won't touch anyone with no experience who will be off once a job they really want comes up. Also, insisting I chase job apps with agencies or they'll stop my job seekers, when I've already shown them the ad saying "if you do not hear within 7 days assume you are unsuccessful", (when it's been 10 days so I've obv not got an interview). I lived literally next to the job centre for years before that: an employee there pestered us with letters re 'adopting' the stray cat we were feeding, which he could see from his window. We had to speak to his Manager, as he got v v weird & obsessive about it , to the point it was scary/stalkerish. Luckily he didn't conect the dots when I saw him at the job centre once, but he was quite, quite mad: no idea how he held down a job .

Pollypocket89 · 12/06/2021 06:56

Op, you should definitely complain. That's not acceptable

To pp saying staff have no idea...its not their personal opinion that you should look for any job etc, it's legally what they have to 'enforce' so you can claim universal credit and get money

This.

I worked abroad for years in the holiday industry and came home for winter one season. I applied for Christmas retail jobs everywhere. Just retail. Just temporary jobs.

Did I get any? Nope!

When I started asking for feedback I was told I was over qualified!

Apparently you can be over qualified to stack shelves at Christmas. Confused

I'm sorry you had a hard time OP. I've heard many differing stories of attitudes and have often thought they should recruit coaches who have had experience of unemployment and can really support.
