Dh drives for a living and he has just been sent a requirement to fill out his driver details in regards to a section 170- failing to stop or report an accident last month. The time and date given was while he was at work but he has absolutely no clue what they're talking about. There's no damage to his work vehicle, there was no indication of any collision and he absolutely would have stopped even for a slight scuff because otherwise it could put his job at risk. He's really worried.

If he has no idea of any incident, can he be in trouble for failing to report?

Not that I imagine it's something that serious, as they'd probably come and arrest him if he's knocked someone over rather than sending out a penalty notice?

OP, he must complete the form-not giving details of the ID of the driver is punishable by 6 points on the licence and a fine....just get him to complete the form and send it back-take a photo of the completed form incase it goes missing in the post...that way he is complying with the law

Dd2 received a call from the police about an incident she wasn't involved in when she was just 18. Some chancer accused her of damaging her car in a garden centre car park (they'd gone for coffee in 6th form lunch break). She complied. Luckily garden centre had cctv plus a witness according to police. Damage was on the other side of the car and dd's micra was unscathed! Really annoyed me.

Definitely do the right thing and cooperate but don't panic.

@FuckingFabulous Oh yeah please do make sure he responds. If it's a mistake it can be sorted. If it's not, it will still be sorted. If he was in an incident and didn't realise it, I am sure the police will be happy with his side of the story, and will help him deal with it.

Hopefully, it is sorted soon. Smile

Weirdly, a big lorry clipped a little car in a town near me a few weeks ago, and drove off. He was tracked down when someone posted a pic of the back of his lorry on facebook - from their dashcam - and he got in touch immediately. Hesaid he honestly didn't know he had done it. The police believed him, and he paid for the damage (£175) and the matter was dropped.

But yeah your GH does need to contact the police abut this.

Is it a pool vehicle? Could a colleague be pulling a fast one?

ChrisOnTheBeach · 11/06/2021 20:22

Ooops DH! Not GH!

Cloned plates.

Misread/reported plate?

Another driver had your husband’s trailer. Accident happened, number recorded and linked to your husband’s tractor unit and so him.

My dad drives a HGV and had similar a few years ago. Like your husband, he had absolutely no recollection of hitting anything and absolutely would have stopped if he had.

He contacted the police to explain and they looked into it. When all turns out, a driver in the lane next to him on a roundabout had driven exceptionally close to the back end of his trailer (as you do Hmm). CCTV from the road and the HGV showed there was no way he could have known she was there because she had sat in his blind spot. As the truck turned, the trailer clipped her car. Minor damage to the car and non to her. He wouldn't have heard it.

Police were satisfied that he didn't/couldn't know that there was a car so close or that he had clipped her. Case closed.

Hopefully, it will be the same for your DH.
