Am I thick?

I know I'm unreasonably thick when it comes to maths but this has me totally stumped.

I'm checking out planning permission needed and want to ensure the floor area is not over 30m sq.

So the length is 22 feet. The width is 14 feet.
If I change them to meters it's 6.7m x 4.2m which is an area of 28.14m.
If I do the calculation in feet 22 feet x 14 feet then the area is 308 feet which converted is 93m!!

What am I doing wrong here?????

Divide square feet by 10.764 to get square metres.
Easy way: google Square feet to square metres

EverNapping · 10/06/2021 08:16

Grin Google does all my conversion maths too

RaskolnikovsGarret · 10/06/2021 08:16

Not thick just confused. Smile You need to convert 308 SQUARE feet as it’s an area. You should get the right result then.

Yugi · 10/06/2021 08:16

You need to convert Square feet to Square metres on that last conversion. Not ordinary feet to metres. Came out to 28.6sqm

topwings · 10/06/2021 08:17

308 square foot is 28.6 metre squared.

I have no idea why but it's what the conversion calculator on my phone says!

Twistered · 10/06/2021 08:18

But surely I should get the same answer .. why am u getting different answer depending on if I do the calculation in feet or meters?

You're working in ft² and m² not ft and m

You apparently multiply the 308ft² by 0.09290304 to convert to m²

Am I thick?
GNCQ · 10/06/2021 08:24

Because the squared calculation is different!

Ah got it!!! Thanks folks, tried working this out late last night and couldn't get my head round it at all!

The relationship between distance and area isn’t linear. It’s exponential.

A square which is 1 foot on each side is 1sqft
But if you increase the side length the area goes up faster
1x1 = 1
2x2 = 4
3x3 = 9

1m is just over 3ft so 1sqm is more than 9sqft.
You have to think of the area measurement as a completely different unit. Using the same conversion doesn’t work

WittyUser · 10/06/2021 08:31

1 metre is 3.28 feet. 1 metre squared is therefore 3.28^2 = 10.76 feet squared. So when switching between squared measurements you need to divide/multiply by 10.76.

If you were going to do the volume required, then you would need to use the cubed number, so 1 metre cubed = 3.28^3 = 35.3 feet cubed. You would then need to multiply/divide by this number.

Actually, @Yugi, the relationship is quadratic not exponential.
