To think it's too late to book a UK holiday?

Aglassofrose · 09/06/2021 16:31

Long story but our UK Air B&B fell through and then we optimistically booked a villa in Menorca for the last week in August. Panicking now and wondering if it's too late to book a UK holiday for August? Has anyone managed to recently? Everything decent on Air B&B has gone. We have a baby so not looking to camp, and would ideally want a cottage with access out to a garden so that we are not trapped into having days out etc and can hang out at home and let baby explore some days.

Has anyone had any luck anywhere?

Try Hoseasons. Type in your dates and see what comes up. They have cottages and lodge holidays but you could also look at the quieter holiday parks.

IggyAce · 09/06/2021 16:38

Try hoseasons they seem to have lodges available for the last 2 weeks of august.

We postponed our European holiday for the second time and have decided to have a staycation.

I have two weeks off to try and prise teenagers away from their computers, I'm thinking food is the answer! I'm going to get everyone to write down what they'd like to do and where they'd like to eat, I'll spend the budget I would have used to go away so hopefully we can have a lovely time.

I think availability is quite limited but there are some cottages left on various sites (e.g. cottages.com , corncott (if you're looking for a Cornish cottage), booking.com).

emmathedilemma · 09/06/2021 16:46

I've been browsing static caravans, lodges, glamping pod type accommodation and was surprised how much availability i've found. Not all at prices I'm willing to pay but there's quite a lot I would. Hoseasons have cottages too which I only discovered yesterday and on the whole they seemed to be cheaper than the caravans if you're not fussed about the onsite facilities.

I've spent days on Air BnB lately and its slim pickins. Have you tried any other sites?

motogogo · 09/06/2021 16:56

If you are flexible on location, there's plenty. Don't bother with Devon and Cornwall though

CharlotteRose90 · 09/06/2021 17:00

I’ve had luck but we looked at the Yorkshire dales, lakes and Wales. Try those places . We used booking.com I think too and got a good deal.

We had a very similar issue last year when our holiday to Majorca fell through at short notice so decided to book a UK break instead. We just put our available dates into Hoseasons and did a UK wide search. We were originally thinking New Forest, Cornwall, or Isle of Wight but nothing really available. We ended up going to Great Yarmouth which isn't somewhere I probably would have thought of going but there was actually loads to do up there and we had a great time. So yeah, I guess my advice would be open minded about where you are going.

Daisy829 · 09/06/2021 17:07

Depending on where you are look up north. Lots of beautiful places in Northumberland also Scottish holidays finish earlier than children in England so mid august is quieter up there.

Thebookswereherfriends · 09/06/2021 17:22

Try inland places. We’ve booked a lovely cottage for a very reasonable price in Wales, but it’s not near a beach. There’s plenty about if you don’t mind not being near a beach.

Kitkat151 · 09/06/2021 17:34

If you not fussy about where....you should get something.....all the coastal ones ....ones with gardens.....quirky ones....likely to be gone now

Shoxfordian · 09/06/2021 17:35

We booked an apartment in York recently

Seemed to be some stuff about but depends what you want to spend

westwalesholidaycottages.co.uk/lovespoon-house?start=2021-08-21&nights=7

Just had a very quick look. It's in a good location not sure about the price.

ScribblingPixie · 09/06/2021 17:40

In previous years I've had luck last minute with independentcottages.co.uk.

Sirzy · 09/06/2021 17:42

I think the problem is cost more than anything at this point. I looked at the site we are booked on in July and paid £800 for the week and a grade down caravan is now £1500!

Rhumba · 09/06/2021 17:43

Would also suggest Scotland as schools go back mid August.

covidandborisandworld · 09/06/2021 17:44

Change your dates to sept and you would have a lot more choice. August weather is crap usually as well

MerryDecembermas · 09/06/2021 17:45

There's plenty in less popular areas though the prices are eye watering!

MrsOrMiss · 09/06/2021 17:50

Last Monday we booked Centre Parcs for mid June. I was expecting it to be 1000's but it was less than £800.

I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but caravan holidays on a park with a pool are a good option too. My DD is looking at July for a weekend, 6 berth modern caravan for the 5 of them. It was less than £400 and the pool/entertainment passes are included. They can eat out for every meal, have the heating on if needed for so much less than the normal over seas holiday.

Lillyhatesjaz · 09/06/2021 21:21

Try Marsdens for the south west

Thunderpunt · 09/06/2021 21:29

My son just cancelled his room on the Isle of Wight first week of august... they'll always be cancellations but you'll have hunt them down and be flexible on where you go

This is only relevant if you are able to book term time.

School holidays are often 3x the price.

livingthegoodlife · 09/06/2021 21:36

Try and join the specialist holiday cottage Facebook groups, you can post your dates and owners reply with availability. There are generic groups but also specialist groups eg Cornwall & Devon.

I have a cottage near Padstow, I'm fully booked until September and I don't use online travel websites like bookingdotcom. There are lots of other owners out there who still have space.

Good luck. I'll be camping for my own holiday (and took my 3 week old!).

ScribblingPixie · 10/06/2021 18:53

New cottages, just checked one and it had August dates: westwalesholidaycottages.co.uk/new?fbclid=IwAR2l4m7ecbNSFm0GZvNkIo4QDN-3rsDmlwmPj1Wy1WzTpcx0iIw6tCoDAm4
