Joined the gym with my DH last month with all good intentions to go together.
I can't get him to commit to a time and day to go so thought I'll go by myself...….well tonight's the night and I AM FREAKING OUT!
what if everyone stares at me? what if I trip on the treadmill and smash my face on the floor?!

I need some encouragement PLEASE!!!!!!!!! Blush

Yes I went!! I am ridiculously proud of myself.
Am pleased to report that no one stared (like you all said) and there was no tripping off the treadmill.....I'd call that a win! Grin

I have, at various times:
Done most exercises with appalling form
Tipped a barbell off the rack by mistake and said 'Fuck!' very loudly
Smashed the barbell into my chin doing an overhead press
Pulled the bar storage onto myself, complete with 3 bars in it (nearly broke my toe)

Glad you went :)

No one really cares, they just think it is a good thing you’re in the gym, other gym users will sometimes help out if you’re doing something wrong/putting yourself at risk of injury.

Make a plan before you go in, which machine, which exercise, how many reps etc.

OP yessssss!!! Well done!

Great choice :)

Keep going, you never regret a workout x

Well done OP
That's the hardest bit over with breaking the first time barrier
If you keep going regularly then within a few weeks you will notice some benefits to how you feel if not how you look and that is very motivating.
I am still very happy with how much easier I find every day stuff like carrying shopping bags and walking up stairs since I started working out regularly.

I will admit to staring at someone at the gym this week. In my defence he was insanely hot and he was doing perfect pull ups right opposite me with his shirt riding up to reveal his 6 pack. I confessed my sinful objectification of this guy (who was probably young enough to be my son) to DH later and we had a laugh about it so no harm done.

The only time I was aware of people staring at me in 2 years of going regularly was when I hit myself on the head with a 10kg dumbbell that I was trying to snatch and knocked myself out. I came round to a lot of concerned people standing over me trying to help. There was no styling that one out.

once you've been a few times... after say visit 5 you will realise;

NOBODY in the gym is that interested in what you look like, what your lifting, what speed your bumbling around on the treadmill at.

because everyone is completely lost in there own little world, and all the pretty people are only interested in the mirrors and instagram tags.

Keep it going :D don't rub it in DHs face, just the odd comment will sow a seed in the back of his head that one needs to get off ones arse. Wink

No harm done to you no, but please don’t stare at and objectify gym users, all gym users have the right to feel comfortable while they are there.

'Stare at' was an exaggeration for comic effect. Clearly I did not in fact stare at the guy as that would be rude. I noticed in an appreciative fashion and I tried very hard not to look in fact because I would not like someone to do it to me. It was hard not to look because the gym is laid out in grids right now for Covid rules and his was exactly opposite mine.

The only point I was trying to make (with some humour which clearly didn't come off) is that I think people are more likely to look at something cool and impressive than to be pointing and laughing at someone failing. I was actually as impressed with the guys pull up form as I was with his physique and other times that I might give a glance in someone's direction it would be if they are doing something impressive handstand push ups or squatting a huge amount or something like that.

If I have got to know my fellow gym goers a bit on nodding terms then I might even say something if I am impressed. One older guy has lost a huge amount of weight lately so I complimented him on that and I think he was happy and not offended. Once someone commented that they were impressed with my kettlebell snatches that I'd been working on and I thought that was nice.

You really do not need to worry that I am sexually harassing anyone.
