Should I worry?

Ds is 18 months on Friday. He doesn’t really point.
He has a few words, plays with me and brings me stuff to show me, he points to things in books and can follow instructions. He understands so many more words than he can say. He claps, waves and plays peekaboo and overall has no symptoms of ASD.

I wasn’t worried because he will point to stuff in books to show me and I’ll say the word. If I say “where’s …” he’ll point to it. Should I worry

Who’s saying you should be worrying? He sounds fine

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 07/06/2021 10:38

Nope, sounds perfectly normal to me. Every child develops differently, enjoy him and try not to worry.

No I wouldn’t worry. I am a parent of a severely autistic child who never and still doesn’t really understand instructions. He’s never pointed “to share attention” I’d to show me things.b pointing to things in books and understanding are really good things,no try not to worry and enjoy your baby.

Do you mean he doesn't really talk?

I wouldn't worry at all - it sounds like the comprehension is there. Some kids wait longer before talking - I think they like to have it more completely worked out before trying themselves. The pointing may even be an indication that that's what he's doing.

You may well be surprised at how much he knows once he does talk. Mine wasn't saying much at that age, but we discovered by chance that she knew the names for all the digits 1-9 (she'd pointed at them in her counting books, we'd said them, she'd learned).

My dd was the same. She could say only daddy and play and was very similar, I was also worried as autism runs in my family. Literally day after she turned two (they have a language explosion around this time) she woke me up with "mama good morning I like coco pops please" I was gobsmacked.

She's now just turned 3 and we have proper conversations!

Don't worry!
