Everyone eats melba toast when they're ill

When I was young if I ever had a day off school poorly, mum would make me homemade melba toast by cutting the crusts off some bread, toasting it, then slicing it in half horizontally (like making two thinner slices) then grill it with what had been the inside of the toast slice up so it curled up.

I thought, until yesterday, that this was a perfectly standard off-ill delicacy and offered to make some for DH if he had a bad reaction to his vaccine. He was perplexed by the concept and consultation with a wider group suggests this was not as common a practice as I had been led to believe.

So two questions for you all:

  1. Is homemade melba toast something that for you goes hand in hand with a day off ill?
  2. If not did your parents/carers have any special recipes reserved for the suffering?!

Peach Melba is an ice cream dish so not any good if your poorly really ( unless it's a child having their tonsils out , which they probably don't do anymore now anyway !)

@HeronLanyon

Newsflash - I am going to try to make melba toast ! No idea why but the urge has taken hold - strongly. May make some mushroom pate to accompany. May remove batteries from smoke alarm briefly just in case. Looks a bit of a delicate process.
Need a photo !
BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 07/06/2021 12:36

Used to love egg in a cup with lots of butter and salt and pepper.

If I'm feeling a little unloved I'll have a tin of tomato soup for lunch - Heinz - as it whisks me back to my Mum being nice when I was ill. I spent quite a lot of time ill as a child.

With white untoasted plastic bread. Not toast as my DH weirdly insists on having.

HeronLanyon · 07/06/2021 12:38

the80s I don’t have suitable bread and am waiting in for two
Amazon deliveries so shopping is delayed. Minor delay I’m hoping. Will furnish photo if I manage this today !

Cocomarine, I think I was about 7 years old when that combination began, so my DM probably shouldn't have added the sherry, but I am pretty sure it was the sherry that made it taste so yummy - by the way that was in the 1960's 😊

GiantToadstool · 07/06/2021 12:39

Why is the egg in a cup?! (And not a bowl or on a plate...)

moirarosebabay · 07/06/2021 12:42

I love melba toast but it's a Christmas food with me Grinthe food I was given while off colour (with mumps ) was banana toasties with sugar.

RuggerHug · 07/06/2021 12:47

@AGirlCalledJohnny

No flat 7uppers in the house? That and toast are well known cure alls for every Irish complaint. Every. Single. One. Your arm could be hanging off and your mammy would run to the shops for some 7up, opening it immediately to let the bubbles out.

My mom used to make Melba toast OP, but only to go with her homemade patê Grin

I was getting worried no one would say this!! And Sudocrem. Weird skin thing? Sudo. Chicken pox? Sudo. Broken leg? Sudo.
CarlottaValdez · 07/06/2021 12:49

My mum mostly thinks all problems are caused by not drinking enough water. Headaches, colds, bullet to the head - all fixable by staying hydrated.

HeronLanyon · 07/06/2021 12:55

My ‘egg in a cup’ has always been in a small bowl like a small snack/nut bowl so that it stays hot and as little as possible of the yolk will be lost on the bowl itself. If I did use a cup it would be smallest possible almost like an espresso cup - have never used a cup/mug.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 12:59

Good luck making the melba toast!

For chicken pox it was always camomile lotion ( and sun burn) ( I think that's the right spelling, it's a pink liquid )
For nat bites try soda crystals, dab a lump of it under tepid water then apply to the bite. Stops the itching but you do end up with big white patches. Nat bites are huge these days.
Add it to your washing too for to clean out the pipes of your machine. It's very versatile and cheap to buy.

Dry cheerios (the plain kind), sports drinks (e.g. Gatorade) and instant soup in this house for children with low appetites or dodgy tummies. Moving on to fruit and yoghurt or scrambled egg as they recover.

I can remember a few times having scrambled egg and toast when I was ill as a child, but I don't have too many memories of what I ate. I know I always watched Fantasia on the sofa under a duvet.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 13:01

You can buy egg cups : They are a clever invention for a hard or soft boiled egg.
I liked ' soldiers' with marmite. It's just cut up bread with a slightly more exotic sounding name!!

twoshedsjackson · 07/06/2021 13:08

I agree about Lucozade. But now, it just doesn't taste the same as when it came from the chemist and the glass bottle was wrapped on orange cellophane.
Ice cream when throat was sore; this was a great treat when we had no fridge or freezer, and usually a holiday thing. The block of ice cream would be brought home wrapped in newspaper for insulation.

Horehound · 07/06/2021 13:10

No not a thing in our household but my granny made it and was great with paté!

We got egg mashed up in a cup.
Or tomato soup, bread and butter.
Cosy juice

Horehound · 07/06/2021 13:11

@GiantToadstool

Why is the egg in a cup?! (And not a bowl or on a plate...)
Because you put it in the cup with a dod of butter and chop it all up/mash it together. It's just easy to eat and keeps it warm
speakout · 07/06/2021 13:14

Oh yes I remember egg in a cup, was a favourite breakfast when I was a toddler or when I was ill.
A lightly mashed soft boiled egg, small pieces of torn bread, salt and butter, all mixed together.

redfairy · 07/06/2021 13:29

Soft boiled egg with chopped up bread and butter. delicious at the time but now...boak!

mum11970 · 07/06/2021 13:39

Plain dry toast is easier to stomach if you have an upset tummy so probably why no one has ever reacted to mentioning melba toast when ill. Couldn’t be bothered with cutting it in half to make melba toast.

WeeWelshWoman · 07/06/2021 14:15

1.) No
2.) Tomato soup and a roll / fishfinger sandwich if feeling a bit perkier.

sueelleker · 07/06/2021 15:30

Tomato soup and buttered brown Hovis.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 16:38

Seems we all eat better when we're poorly than when we are well.
I had a bad 24 hour ' bug' a few years ago and it's horrible that feeling of hunger but just knowing that eating or drinking anything isn't a good idea really. It's a bit of a dilemma what to do and everyone going ' drink water' when you just can't.

Royalbloo · 07/06/2021 16:40
  1. No
  2. Muller peach fruit corner, a magazine and some tissues
Royalbloo · 07/06/2021 16:40

And if I'd been sick my nan used to cover me in Chanel no 5

Royalbloo · 07/06/2021 16:42

And Mum got me Grease on video when I had concussion lol
