Coughing twins who share a room

Aibu to think we're all going to be up every night until they're better?? How do I stop them washing each other up all night? We don't have room to split them, and they can't really be left in a bed as they'll fall out. I can sit beside a bed all night but if the other one starts coughing I'd have to have them to sort the other one out and what is he falls out then?

It isn't covid, DS had a routine proper chicks test, no one else is ill, twin2 has a proper covid test last week so doctor would see us but I'm assuming gp still won't see us without a test. It was virally last week and send to get better but now it's full snot again

Have I done something wrong that they've not for over it yet, it's been several weeks. They're 17 months so into everything and locking everything and kissing me and putting v their hands in my mouth etc and I'm fine so I think it is just virally so maybe wouldn't bother docs but they're so snotty and just keep coughing I don't know what else to do

It's quite normal for a cough to last a few weeks after a cold, same with post nasal drip etc.

Separate them if it’s causing them to wake each other up. One in bed with you, the other in bed with your partner on the floor.

Lots of vaporub, olbas oil on a muslin by end of bed, sterimar, calpol etc to get you through, and lots of vitamin c righ fresh foods for all of you.

My DC caught lots of colds at that age with coughs that lasted weeks.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 00:02

They're so snotty too. But they aren't sleeping well because of each others cough too. Just took DH and I 40 minutes to get them both back to sleep, and they're still coughing intermittently. I've given them calpol which o know DH isn't keen on but I'm assuming their throat must be sore if they're constantly coughing.

@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 they're a nightmare at cosleeping, I've had one or the other in my bed at 4 am the last 4 mornings and they just sleep. I'm thinking i might have to take the worst one into eldests bedroom (he's away) and hope the other one sleeps through if they get bad. DH won't hear them without his hearing aid in 😐

Yes take one into other bedroom and leave DH with whoever needs less attention. Better to get some sleep than none.

Also currently unless they’ve both had a covid test (your post wasn’t clear) you should all be isolating.

I rub baby vickes on twins feet when they have a cough. Just rub on feet and out socks on. They usually get better in a few days

Yes when the coughs started, GP also happy it's viral but I worry about it going into their chest and then having a chest infection or it being bronchiolitis

Vicks on feet does help!

UnconsideredTrifles · 06/06/2021 08:04

If the coughing is waking them up, have you tried a wedge shaped pillow? Sleeping in a more upright position can make a big difference.

c24680 · 06/06/2021 08:06

Use a diffuser with eucalyptus oil that'll help

inappropriateraspberry · 06/06/2021 08:33

I think it's one of those things that you just have to get through! They can nap in the day if they're tired, but you'll have to grin and bear it I'm afraid. It's something they will have to get used to if they are going to be sharing a room for a long time.

JustLyra · 06/06/2021 09:48

If they’re in cots still then putting a rolled towel under the mattress or using cot blocks to tilt one end might help

tealandteal · 06/06/2021 09:56

Came on to stay put vicks on their feet! Not sure how it works but it's magic!

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 10:24

The problem with propping is they're 17 months, they in no way sleep vaguely stationary. So we got rid of the reflux wedges as they'd just end up tilted the wrong way.

Will get some baby vapour rub when I go out later.

I did wonder if it was reflux as it started as a night cough but they're super snotty.

I have some health anxiety issues around them so I'm trying to work out when it's appropriate to call the GP again just to be told it's viral and it'll get better at some point in the next 18 months!!

T2 is back down sleeping, T1 is the worse sleeper anyway and is wandering around still. They slept ok last night in the end

If you put the wedge (or a rolled towel) under the mattress then they can’t turn it round.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 10:35

No they turn around so they end up sideways or sleeping with their feet up on the wedge and their head below. They do not sleep stationary. I'll give it a try anyway tonight so they e got the option tho

Could it be teething? My kids always get a cold/runny nose/cough when teething. Have you given them any teething remedies to see if it helps?

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 15:19

They are teething, ones in the gap and the first of the biggies. They have the powders when it seems to hurt but I didn't realise the coughing could be linked, thank you
