Aibu...how to get bathroom clean

prettyclothes · 05/06/2021 23:09

Aibu to wonder how people really get their bathrooms sparkling clean. Ours is relatively new and still we have black mould built up around the bath tub. I do clean it, have tried soaking cotton wool in bleach and leaving it on the mould (no charge). Have tried cillit bang mould remover (no change). How do you get your bathroom really clean and particularly how do you get rid of black mould?

It might be worth cutting the sealant out and replacing it.

pickingdaisies · 05/06/2021 23:13

Definitely replace the sealant. Mould can penetrate some sealant, so just cleaning the surface of it will make no difference. I think you can get some that is more resistant.

Rosewood017 · 05/06/2021 23:23

HG mould remover foam spray is really effective. Is it well ventilated? We don't have an extractor fan in our shower room but leave the small window open when showering and the main door open afterwards.

PixieDust28 · 05/06/2021 23:25

Replace the sealant.

Do you leave your bathroom to air? If you have a window leave it open each day and especially after baths or showers. If you don't have a window use the fan and leave the door open.

Also, I don't leave anything like flannels to dry on the bath and never leave the soaking wet. I place them on my bathroom radiator. Also I won't leave shower bottles or anything else on the side of the bath. They always end up with puddles at the bottom of them.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/06/2021 23:29

Replace sealant as pps said.

Otherwise for any mould or mildew related issues. HG spray😳 Do be careful and I recommend open window and mask on. Quickly spray, and run.

Titsywoo · 05/06/2021 23:30

We don't have a problem with mould but I leave the window wide open after baths and showers until the steam is all gone. Even in winter which annoys DH!

boredsolicitor · 05/06/2021 23:30

I feel your pain. I can't get rid of limescale on my tiles in the wet room . Looks awful

MrMeeseekslookatme · 05/06/2021 23:31

Replaceme the sealant. Also don't bother messing about with cotton wool. Apply neat bleach and leave it a couple of hours.

BonnyEm · 05/06/2021 23:35

I agree with ventilation. We have a mould problem too but I try to stay on top of it, if I see a tiny bit I spray with mould and mildew remover straight away or it spreads fast.
Windows open during and after showers, even in winter.

I honestly had the best results with simple vinegar. None of the shop bought sprays did anything.

A general tip for sparkling sinks / baths etc is to clean as normal then give a light spray down with Mr Muscle window cleaner and finish with a quick wipe dry with kitchen towel. Looks amazing!

UhtredRagnarson · 05/06/2021 23:38

Is it just the silicone sealant that’s is a problem? If so remove it, dry the whole area thoroughly and re seal then once it’s set dry it after every shower/bath with a towel and spray astonish mould and mildew remover once a week and leave for 15 minutes when you’re cleaning the rest of the bathroom.

If it’s the rest of the bathroom you need help with cleaning, you just er, clean! Grin glass spray for mirror, window and outside of shower screen, bathroom spray for basin and splash back, bath, shower walls and tray, and toilet from top of cistern, including flush button/handle down to lid, both sides, seat, both sides, and toilet bowl inside and out. if possible remove water trap from shower and spray with mould and mildew remover and leave for 15 mins along with silicone sealant. Scrub all surfaces and rinse off with water. Flush toilet and squirt bleach round the inside of the bowl. Spray shower shine on inside of shower and leave it. Hoover and mop the floor. Ban everyone from using the bathroom. Grin

UhtredRagnarson · 05/06/2021 23:39

And yes to proper ventilation. Leave the bathroom window open during the day. Use extractor fan when showering.

randomchap · 05/06/2021 23:43

As Rosewood017 said, HG mould spray works wonders on the black mould. I use it every couple of months.

Glitterblue · 05/06/2021 23:47

Our bathroom is shocking for mould. Our landlord had painted it in normal paint and the extractor fan is far too small and in the wrong place. They won't do anything about it so we arranged to have it repainted with proper bathroom paint at our expense, and the mould is back with a vengeance. Anything that's left in there even overnight gets black mould. DH has a scrubby thing that attaches onto his electric drill, and he uses that with the Dettol mould stuff and that really takes it off the tiles. They're like brand new again. The walls are another matter though.

Shock that’s a serious problem!! You should have the council do an environmental health inspection. They can issue an order for the landlord to rectify the problem. In the meantime, dry off the shower/bath walls after every bath/shower. Leave the bathroom door and window open permanently (close the door when in use obviously) with rest of the windows and doors in house open too or alternatively plug in a dehumidifier in the socket nearest the bathroom and put it into the bathroom and close the door and window and just run it 24/7.

Viakhal will shift it
boredsolicitor · 06/06/2021 07:46

Thanks Schrodinger and Stevalnamechanger for your tips I Will have another go t it

Sidalee7 · 06/06/2021 09:17

Agree it’s ventilation, you need the whole room to air after a shower.
Open the shower door or curtain, wipe down tiles and taps with a dry cloth, squeegee the shower door. Leave windows and doors open. Get a decent fan.
With bathrooms I think a little goes a long way, I do all of the above daily and use a non toxic shower spray on bath, tiles, sink and loo.
White vinegar/water to keep limescale at bay from the shower head is worth doing weekly.

SimonJT · 06/06/2021 09:29

Ventillation, mould will only grow in areas that are damp/humid. You will likely need to replace the sealant for new.

notanothertakeaway · 06/06/2021 09:33

Once sealant goes mouldy, there's no going back, but it is surprisingly easy to replace. You'll need a caulk gun. Check out Charlie DIYite on YouTube. He has some really helpful videos

BashfulClam · 06/06/2021 12:29

Hg mould is fab, you get it in b&q and hardware stores. Apply it at half hour intervals a few times and it really kills it. I don’t have a bathroom window so I open all the other windows upstairs and use a wee electric dehumidifier. After a shower I use an old towel to wipe down the tiles and sealant to keep it dry. I tried bleach and cotton wool and it was useless.I keep the sealant dry and it really helps.

I thought that until I used the HG stuff. I was selling the house and didn’t want the hassle.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/06/2021 12:31

Good news, it's also in tesco!
I spray and run if it's needdd because it stings my eyes ehrn in a same room

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 12:50

Replacement sealant

HG mould spray

More ventilation or a dehumidifier.

If you go for the dehumidifier don't mess round trying cheaper, dessicant or little ones. Go straight for the Meaco 20l Platinum. It's worth the price tag and if you believe me you'll save about that much in trying and rejecting the cheaper ones 😊

Did you say you are renting? Ask your landlord to buy one for you, or to go halves if he offers a cheap version.
