Very house proud
Not a crumb around
But every summer we are invaded by ants

Remedies?
I have NO issue with very harsh chemicals!

TIA

Cucumber! You won't believe it until you try it but place fresh sliced cucumber wherever they are coming in and keep doing it for a couple of days.

Luxplus · 05/06/2021 11:03

I use Peppers around all the house. The hate pepper..

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/06/2021 11:03

I got a thing called “ant stop” but that does kill them. Not cruelty free therefore.

Honestly? I’m at my wits end and no issue with cruelty!

Where did you buy please?

I just use ant powder. Or boiling water. We get them every summer too and I can't get sentimental about it.

Tried that, and when I came in in the morning the cucumber was a teeming mass of ants!

Have you tried those little ant traps? They sell them at B&Q.

Rosewood017 · 05/06/2021 11:06

We have this issue too. We place little ant traps around. They get food from them and take it back to the nest, which does kill them but otherwise they just keep multiplying.

They really shouldn't trespass!

Which trap brand do you use please?

We have this too. We keep syrups etc in a tin and keep wiping over surfaces with Dettol/bleach. But I noticed a load of them swarming around the outside bin when I put it out in the week.

Apparently the queen can live for years, so it's very difficult to get rid of the nest unless you find the queen.

In previous years we've had worse infestations than this year - keeping sweet stuff out of the way does make a real difference.

Yesterday morning noticed a good group hanging around our back door. Noticed where they were getting in and sprinkled a lot of cinnamon down around the hole and along the door. None this morning.

sashh · 05/06/2021 11:13

I had a nest just outside my back door under the flags - a couple of kettles of boiling water got rid.

Do yo know where they are coming from?

Starmanwaitinginthesky · 05/06/2021 11:14

Try washing up liquid, green one

Rosewood017 · 05/06/2021 11:14

@Sometimesfraught82 I bought some off Amazon - Ant Stop bait station!

Viviennemary · 05/06/2021 11:18

Im not a fan of ants. But slugs are a different level. I've not seen a single ant yet.

Pbbananabagel · 05/06/2021 11:18

You need a product called ‘Combat ant killing gel’.
We keep repeat ants every single damn year at the backdoor, we’ve changed the door and the floor, but I’ve still already had them this year. The gel is literally the only thing that works- they eat it and take it back to share with their friends:

hippidyhiphip · 05/06/2021 11:21

Nippon is amazing. Little circular traps, the ants go in and then take the poison back to their nests.

user1471538283 · 05/06/2021 11:23

Nippon and if they are in the walls you might have to put some in there. There used to be a spray you could put around the perimeter of houses that was quite good. Boiling water will kill those you see.

pigsDOfly · 05/06/2021 11:30

I found an ants' nest behind the kickboard in my kitchen.

Noticed a few ants for several days then came down one morning to see them having a party in my kitchen.

In panic I grabbed a spray bottle of Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner out of the cupboard and sprayed liberally (don't have anything like ant powder or spray in the house).

There were a few hardy ones hanging around the next day so I did a smaller spray just to finish them off and haven't seen a single ant since.

Probably not ideal, but it certainly works.

HappyRaven · 05/06/2021 11:31

Last year I put a pile of sweets (well skittles actually) away from the house. Once the ants found it they didn't bother trying to get back in. They are just looking for food.

LittleRa · 05/06/2021 11:36

Another recommendation for Ant Stop Bait Trap from Amazon

ChainJane · 05/06/2021 11:44

I find Dethlac spray works very well. You can use it indoors as well as outdoors, you just spray it onto a solid surface where the ants are. It kills them and continues to kill insects that walk across it for a few hours after drying.

Don't bother with natural methods, get the chemicals out!

BanginChoons · 05/06/2021 11:48

YIou need to figure out how theh are getting in. In our case it was the front door. I put ant powder down outside but didn't want to use it in the house as we have cats. A friend recommended white vinegar. I sprayed it along the route the ants were using along the skirting in the hallway, and at the corners of the front door. Two days later not a single ant in sight.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 05/06/2021 11:51

Work out where they are getting in and deal with silicone sealant- job done, no germ warfare

SnorkMaidensTummy · 05/06/2021 11:51

Peppermint oil. Spread it along their route.
