AIBU to think it's stupid to get a husky if you live in a city centre two bedroom apartment?

Because that's what my dickhead neighbours have done. Tiny wee flats, no garden, and they've got this frigging massive animal they let run around the fucking car park and on the scarce little bit of green space in front of the flats.

This isn't ok is it? Not in terms of dog or other residents? Please tell me I'm not wrong.

My dd is living in a European city atm, where apartment living is much the norm. She does dog sitting and last week was looking after an Australian shepherd pup in an apartment. She says it’s already starting to go stir crazy. Poor wee thing. People are dicks sometimes.

romdowa · 04/06/2021 05:40

A small dog in an apartment is fine , as is a big dog if it is given the required exercise. Huskies require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation and if they don't get it ? They will just wreck the place and become escape artists. My old neighbours had one , never took very good care of it and the poor dog went a bit crazy from boredom and frustration. I actually think huskies shouldn't be domestic pets at all.

CounsellorTroi · 04/06/2021 06:22

Absolutely stupid. I love huskies but they do need a lot of exercise and they are also very vocal which is not ideal if you’re living in a flat.

stayathomer · 04/06/2021 06:31

I feel sorry for Huskies in general, somewhere along the way they became the 'in' breed to have and I'd say there's a lot more inappropriate owners than appropriate. When we visited Dogs Trust Huskies, rottweilers and Jack Russells were definitely the more prevalent breeds

cupsofcoffee · 04/06/2021 06:45

It's cruel.

The vast majority of husky owners don't give their dogs what they need imo. I see a lot of overweight ones who are stuck on slow, plodding lead walks as their owners can't trust them off-lead but also can't be bothered to run them. They must be miserable.

I used to walk a husky who was stuck in a tiny home with an elderly owner - gorgeous dog but she was aggressive and temperamental and I suspect it's because she didn't get anywhere near the amount of exercise required for her breed.

Very sad.

LynnInAVan · 04/06/2021 06:55

Poor thing, that dog will get very noisy soon

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 04/06/2021 06:57

DH and I were just saying the other day that thank God the husky craze seemed to have died down as people realised what high-input dogs they are. But perhaps we spoke too soon.

People can be so clueless and it's the dogs that suffer. We have full-on dogs that take a lot of time and effort to keep them happy and civilised, and I'd never recommend the breed to just anyone.

I hope that either those owners take up running or that dog finds a new home.

BlueDucky · 04/06/2021 06:59

It's going to destroy their home and then they'll probably get rid of it. Maybe tell the housing association?

EastWestWhosBest · 04/06/2021 07:01

My attached neighbour have a husky Alsatian cross.
Despite the fact that we live really close to two massive parks (one is literally at the end of our gardens and the other is two streets away) they never walk the poor thing. They put it in the front garden for a shit and that’s it. Poor sod.

KizzyKat91 · 04/06/2021 07:07

They’re idiots. A friend got a husky when he worked long hours and night shifts, and lived in a small 2 bed terrace with a postage stamp garden. It was a disaster from day 1! The dog went from being friendly and easy going when he first got her, to destructive and hyperactive within a few months. It used to regularly scale the 6ft garden fence and run off.
The dog ended up biting a friend and attacking a child. He gave her to the rescue and last we heard, they couldn’t home her due to the biting history and there was a possibility she may be euthanised :(

Everyone warned him, but he just wouldn’t listen!

RedMarauder · 04/06/2021 07:23

OP please report them to your housing association citing the dog fouling as the major issue. Describe the stools as large in your complaint to make it clear you are complaining about a large dog. They won't want their staff having to repeatedly clean the shit up due to cost and hygiene reasons.

Someone near me has a husky. Both the owners were originally very overweight and would be seen taking the dog on two short walks a day. He was the one larger dogs I stayed away from if he came towards me. Within 3 months of them having the husky, he was wearing a muzzle. Three years later one of the owners had lost loads of weight because he is seen taking the dog out for lots of exercise still wearing a muzzle. (The only other muzzled dogs in my area are greyhounds.)

BlueLobelia · 04/06/2021 07:31

@MiddlesexGirl

That poor poor dog. Maybe contact a local animal welfare charity / local council / RSPCA to see if there's anything that can be done.
I agree with this.

Poor dog.

(reminds me of my dickhead neighbour who got an Irish wolfhound puppy in an appartment apparently not realising the things grow)

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/06/2021 07:34

I had a neighbour who got one- tiny terrace house with an even smaller garden- they were turfed out by their landlord and the giant animal destroyed their fence.
Absolute idiots!

WildfirePonie · 04/06/2021 07:47

Idiots... I'm sure they will end up rehoming the dog.

tttigress · 04/06/2021 07:54

I put YANBU, I guess it could work if they took it for a 2 or 3 hour walk/run per day, but I'm sure they won't

KarmaStar · 04/06/2021 08:06

That poor dog.it's mental torture at being cooped up and not exercised is going to cause problems.could you speak to the husky rescue for advise sunshine ? So sad these idiots are allowed a dog at all let alone a specialist dog like that.it's good you care.🌈

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 04/06/2021 08:19

Huskies were bred as working dogs to pull sleds for miles, the breed definitely aren’t suited to living in a flat with no outside space. It would need a massive amount of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy living in those conditions.

DeathByWalkies · 04/06/2021 08:19

I'm not going to pearl clutch about dogs in flats - I'm in a flat on the edge of a city centre, with a small concrete yard for a garden, and have a dog.

But huskies are very hard work and need far more exercise than people realise. As they often have crap recall, it's incredibly hard to give them what they need in urban parks. I wouldn't have one because I don't think I could give them what they need - other breeds such as border collies fall into the same category. Unfortunately - since Game of Thrones - they have also become very attractive to dickhead owners.

The size of the dog wouldn't worry me too much - there's a myth that the bigger the dog the more exercise they need. There's enough big breeds that are sprint and flop type dogs (greyhounds) and plodders (e.g. Irish wolfhounds mentioned upfront - I used to know three when I lived in inner London). On the other hand Jack Russells are little, can go for hours, and still be up for a game of fetch. They don't bloody stop!

Sprayerhayer · 04/06/2021 08:22

Absolute idiots. Poor, poor bloody dog Sad honestly I would report to the HA and perhaps contact a huskie rescue for advice, they may contact the owner and offer to rehome.

Honestly, the poor dog will become a nightmare soon, howling and will wreck their entire apartment (serves them right)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen 1 husky owner that’s actually equipped to have one (always walked around urban streets on haltis) unless you’re like an above poster, with acres of land, please do not get a fucking husky, even if you can walk it for 2 hours a day. They need so much stimulation. People in urban areas shouldn’t own working dogs like husky’s, I’m sorry but it’s true.

LemonRoses · 04/06/2021 08:24

Cruel. Poor dog

Motnight · 04/06/2021 08:27

@SunshineSum

No idea what they do about walks. I just come home from work and the fucking thing's running around like a mad steel eyed cunt and shitting everywhere.
That has made laugh, Op.
TheDogsMother · 04/06/2021 08:34

How horribly cruel to that dog. It needs space and loads of exercise. How can some people be so stupid ?

Bluesheep8 · 04/06/2021 08:34

Heart breaking. Poor, poor dog. Report to the HA. Please

HerMammy · 04/06/2021 08:36

Rescues are inundated with Huskies, usually aged 1/2, outgrown the puppy cuteness and full size wrecking machines.
Intially it was known as the ‘Twilight Effect’ but the demand for them doesn’t seem to have abated sadly.
The few good husky owners I know participate in dry sledging or cani cross to keep them happy.

MSQuinn · 04/06/2021 08:37

What shitty people. Lots of people getting lockdown puppies. But a husky requires a lot of exercise, poor thing.
