I have a male friend who is in his 20s and lives in a college dorm and doing a Masters. I've known him since secondary school.
The last year was incredibly hard on him. He's always been a very smart and hard working student but he also struggles with autism that's impacted not just his social relationships but his outlook on life and sometimes he has done/said very odd things.
I've always been supportive and never judgmental but last year I was a bit shocked. In Oct, he attended some classes on campus as they were 'hybrid/blended learning'. His grades started slipping, one of his other roomates moved out only leaving him with someone he didn't like and he also got COVID.
Having been chatting on WhatsApp he seemed low so I didn't suspect anything until I got a message from his roomate who went through his unlocked phone saying that he'd been admitted to the hospital for drinking antifreeze/windshield washer fluid (containing methanol/ethylene glycol/isopropranol). He'd been doing this for days and was only caught by the roommate finding empty de-icer bottles.
He was treated and discharged a few weeks with thankfully no damage. I met him up when the lockdown was eased and he talked about it but seemed non-chalant. I recommended talking to his psychiatrist etc... but he said that he's talk to them and they don't have an interest. Said the lockdown was stressful and he might consider it again to end things if things don't get better.
I asked him how his family would feel and his says that he's estranged from them. I know he's an adult and can do what he likes but imo, he doesn't seem to be the most stable of people. I'm also shocked that his psychiatrist shrugged it off...but then again knowing the mental health system in Ireland, it comes as no surprise.
