I got an opal ring from my husband for Christmas last year. Iv hardly wore it because it keeps catching on my clothes because the 'bits'? that hold the opal in place dont sit flush. I stupidly used a pair of pliers to try squeeze them down a bit and have cracked the opal!!!!! I'm so fucking annoyed with myself. Iv frantically been searching online how easy it would be to repair but so far it doesn't appear to be something that can be fixed. What the fuck can I do? WIBU to just dab a bit of glue on it? The opal is currently out of the ring setting with a small top piece broken off 🥺
Any help at all would be gratefully appreciated.

Don't make it any worse. Take it to a jeweller and see if it's worth fixing.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/06/2021 20:23

Nope.

Opals are soft and crack easily. Take it to a jeweller and they may be able to cut a new smaller stone out of the stone you have (if they do that sort of thing, not all jewellers are stone cutters!).

Otherwise, buy a new opal for it and have it set in that ring?

Opals crack so easily. Are you worried he'll be angry with you or upset about it? I don't think a white lie will hurt here. It could just as easily have happened if you knocked it against something.

Ninkanink · 03/06/2021 21:16

Opals are really delicate.

Don’t try anything silly to ‘fix’ it. It won’t work.

Take it to a jeweller and see if anything can be done to rescue it.

JoyOrbison · 03/06/2021 21:20

Whereabouts are you op? I know 2 amazing jewellers, one in Huddersfield and one in Elam

Curiosity101 · 03/06/2021 21:21

The whole reason it's broken is that you wanted to wear it. I'd come up with a plan to fix it and then fess up to your DH before doing anything else.

Explain you loved it, you wanted to wear it but you were trying to stop it from catching on clothes. You're really sorry and you plan to , but you want to get his opinion first as it was a gift from him.

See what he says. Smile

There is a really cool Japanese method of repairing broken things with gold. I’ve seen some gemstone rings and necklaces like this too and they look amazing. I’d take to a jeweller for advice

He gave me the pliers and I told him straight away so I'm not worried about him, he doesn't seemed to bothered anyway 😂 I'm just really annoyed at myself especially because what iv been reading, it doesn't seem like it can be fixed. I live in a small village up north in Scotland so I don't assume there to be any specialists near by. Iv been in touch with my local jewellers and hoping they have a solution to fix it 🤞

Oh yes that's lovely. It's called kintsugi.

Aaww cripes.. I love Opal .. so pretty..

I hope you find a solution 💕

tara66 · 03/06/2021 22:23

Opals are only really like glass - easily broken. Can you put a small amount of jewellery glue (which dries clear) on the setting? - i.e on the metal part where the stone was set ? Then put the pieces of the opal back into the setting and try to push them together so they stick as the stone was originally.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/06/2021 23:17

Oh no! I love opals but will never wear one until I’m old, gray, and stationary because they are so fussy and fragile. Honestly anything short of diamonds terrify me as I’m really hard on jewelry.

Jewelers can either work miracles or find you new stones. I’ve had to take advantage of both services in my time!

Ninkanink · 04/06/2021 09:17

Might be best to see if you can have it set into a pendant instead. Opals are extremely fragile and you can’t really wear rings day to day for that reason - they will be damaged repeatedly.

Yes! I think that would look far better than a repair you've tried to hide. It's also part of the "story" of the Opal.
Forgothowtospell · 04/06/2021 12:07

Iv only wore it a handful of times. Iv spoke to my jewelers and they are going to send it away and see what they can do. I have seen videos of the Japanese method with the gold and it looks really good but don't know where I'd find someone to do it. It's also just the very top of the opal so might actually end up looking quite odd. It's pear shaped and it's the point at the top that broken off
