To cancel plans due to PMS?

I get quite emotional leading up to my period and have issues with my body image around this time. My body bloats and my boobs grow and I don’t recognise myself. I have a healthy BMI.

I was due to go for a meal tonight bought a new dress today and I have just been hit by the worst hormonal fluctuations. I can’t stop crying I hate my body in the dress I don’t even want to leave the house. I have just cancelled the meal because I feel so upset.

Is this extreme PMS? Do I need to see somebody about this or is this a normal thing?

Yanbu. It’s horrible. Contraception helps

I have had severe PMT so I understand it can have a big impact so you may be better off not forcing yourself to go out but for future plans perhaps you can plan ahead a bit more so you are not cancelling on someone at the last minute.

I got to a point where I avoided making certain plans the week or so before my period.

There are also apps you can get to log your moods each day so you can see if there is a pattern to your moods and how much of the month it is affecting you.

I started tracking my period on an app for this reason so I could avoid making plans for that time. Hope you feel better soon. Its rubbish.

Worth speaking to GP as contraception can make a big difference

How many days of your cycle are you as 'bad' as this usually OP? Bad = Emotional enough to cancel a meal out (as opposed to canceling because of physical pain).

If it's one day usually - maybe not even every single month - and it was just bad luck it fell today - then i would look into tracking your moods, avoiding this time for arrangements, and actively try to de-stress on these days.

If it's every month without fail, for more than 24 hours then i would look into getting some help Flowers

Right now I'm on day 3 of the great bleed and i have just today emerged from the lovely feeling like a fat useless fuck stage Grin

I get quite emotional and weepy a few days before I'm due my period, but not to the extent I'd need to cancel plans, that sounds really tough. There are conditions where your experience is more extreme than normal so as others said I'd definitely speak to your GP. I suffered from hellish periods for years before being diagnosed with PCOS and getting treated and honestly I regret spending years suffering in silence. Hope that helps Flowers

I can definitely relate. I really struggle to be around other people during PMS. I sort of feel like it's normal but maybe not!

WorraLiberty · 03/06/2021 17:08

It's impacting your life, so yes you need to see your GP.

MumInBrussels · 03/06/2021 17:51

Have you looked into PMDD? I think I found out about it on Mumsnet, and it was amazing to realise that I wasn't just uniquely bad at dealing with periods, and not everyone has PMS like this! www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd/about-pmdd/

sociallydistained · 03/06/2021 19:40

To those saying contraception helps. It made me 10x worse. But yes I try and plan around it. I’ve already said no to plans on Sunday. Not gonna happen 😩
