Iron is low, I'd want mine up around the 20 mark at least. I don't know about the others.

What does your dr say?

Floradix is a great supplement

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 11:08

Thank you These are in my mental health notes my GP was meant to follow up. They didn’t I assumed they over looked it

Gosh I think chase your GP. If this is recent and if you are feeling tired etc I would guess you need to get your iron levels up.

It can take a few days to kick in. If you do buy an iron supplement, it's important to also take vitamin C or eat/drink something high in vitamin C at the same time as this helps absorption process.

Honestly I'd just pick up some Floradix and get going...

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 11:19

Yes I’m thinking that as I pay for my prescriptions so might be cheaper. The doctor in the mental health hospital also recommended folic acid.

ashmts · 03/06/2021 11:23

You need to speak to your GP, it looks like you're a bit anaemic. Probably easily solved with some supplements. Don't just buy something off the shelf, you'll need proper doses and monitoring. If it's cheaper to buy then the GP/pharmacist will advise you.

Barton10 · 03/06/2021 11:51

That iron level is low, when I had my DD I lost blood and wasn't allowed to leave the hospital until my iron level was over 8. I was then given iron tablets to help.

TheChiefJo · 03/06/2021 12:01

Don't just buy off shelf supplements, you need the prescription stuff and bloods redoing for monitoring. You need to chase your GP.

Not necessarily. My psychiatrist recommended Floradix for exactly this.
ashmts · 03/06/2021 12:07

@TellMeMoreThanThis Your psychiatrist is a HCP who can make that decision. It's not appropriate for anyone on here to prescribe/advise medicines (even if they are a HCP, which I am). A quick glance shows that two tablets of Floradix contains 400mcg folic acid. The normal prescribed dose for deficiency is 5mg. Haven't even looked at the iron content but if it's appropriate to buy, OP's GP or pharmacist will tell her.

Notaroadrunner · 03/06/2021 12:09

I'm taking Active Iron for women. It has 2 daily tablets - one iron and the other a mix of vitamins including folic acid. It's also gentle on the stomach. My gp rang me to say I was mildly anaemic and to get an over the counter iron supplement, so the pharmacy recommended them. I have to have repeat bloods in a month.

Tablets aren't recommended. The liquid is much better.

And no need to be condescending, I know exactly who my psychiatrist is and what is in Floradix

Toddlerteaplease · 03/06/2021 12:11

An HB of 78 isn't just mildly anaemic. It's transfusion level
Anaemic. I hope your GP is investigating why it's so low.

ashmts · 03/06/2021 12:15

It's literally not true that tablets aren't recommended, and also the OP hasn't stated her Hb. This is why you won't take medical advice from strangers on the internet, however well-meaning.

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 12:15

Haemoglobin levels are 130

OP posts:
TheChiefJo · 03/06/2021 12:15

That's OP's iron, not HB.

TheChiefJo · 03/06/2021 12:18

Well, you were a tiny bit patronising to me. Your psychiatrist is treating you, not OP. I'm a hcp too, and it is wise for OP to address this to her GP.

PattyPan · 03/06/2021 13:03

Chase your GP. No one on MN knows your medical history.

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 19:37

I’ve just the letter went to my old gp surgery rather than me new one. So unsure what to do

I don't believe you. I bet you once worked in admin in a hospital. Your ignorance is plain.

Check the Floradix packaging, it says so. Good lord.
TheChiefJo · 03/06/2021 20:49

I couldn't care less, love.

TellMeMoreThanThis · 03/06/2021 20:51

OP could you phone your mental health provider? I know mine would help with this though she is a private provider, not sure if that makes a difference.

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 20:54

They are on leave for two weeks so I can’t

OP posts:
TheChiefJo · 03/06/2021 20:58

Could you contact your old surgery and ask them to forward the letter to your new surgery? If not, your GP might repeat the bloods if you tell them, though I know its not nice to have to be bled again.
