Does everyone know this? Or just me who didn't know?

If you get your dirtiest, greasiest most burnt oven shelves and stick them in some grass cuttings overnight, you can wipe them clean the next day!!!

WTF!

I did it yesterday thinking it was some sort of late April Fools Joke. But ... IT WORKS!!!

Anyone else not know?

Are you sure its not all the little spiders and insects that live in the grass licking the racks clean during the night? Hmm

JudgeJ · 03/06/2021 12:37

@Disfordarkchocolate

It's in Nancy Birtwistle's Clean and Green book. I may try it too.
I was just about to take my bags of grass to the tip, I'll give this a whirl and report back.
JillsFlapjacks · 03/06/2021 12:39

This might actually give me motivation to cut the grass Grin

Jux · 03/06/2021 12:50

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Does it work on oven doors? I can't see through mine...
I'll take my oven door off and leave it on the lawn....

They're welcome, if they do the cleaning...

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 03/06/2021 13:13

It doesn't matter what gets on them because as soon as you use the oven any nasties will be killed by the heat. Prob best to rinse before putting back in though Grin

I was thinking this, too, but with foxes.

No, it's the spiders dragging their willies over it (of course).
pussycatlickinglollyices · 03/06/2021 16:27

You do realise that

  1. if you don't use clippings and just lie it on the lawn you'll end up with a greasy bit that will attract barefoot kids insects etc...
  2. you might end up forgetting an your DP puts the garden waste bin out and you have to buy new shelves.

🤔😱

Just soak them in hot water and fairy and wipe with a sponge scrubber.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 03/06/2021 17:32

Not everyone has a sink big enough to soak oven shelves...

RedSquirrelsAreAwesome · 03/06/2021 18:35

I like to think it’s a fluttering of ladybirds (or whatever the collective term is) each with several sets of washing up gloves on their ickle arms and legs 🐞

Sssloou · 03/06/2021 18:43

Could you fill a wheelbarrow with all the pots pans, roasting trays, cutlery, utensils from your Sunday roast - lob on some clippings and then hose it all off in the morning?

Geordieoldgirl · 03/06/2021 18:59

That’s amazing! But if, like me, you haven’t got a lawn, you could try ‘Astonish’ Oven and Cookware Cleaner. Non-toxic, no nasty chemicals or horrible fumes, only costs about a pound in Savers, works on the filthiest oven!

SamanthaJayne4 · 03/06/2021 19:25

I watched Bargain Brits last night and a couple living on a barge cleaned their wood burning stove inside glass with a wet, used teabag. It did work. The tea bag must be wet.

mybrainhertz · 03/06/2021 19:57

It'll be down to the slugs. Ds2 went camping and left a dirty pan out overnight and, in the morning, there were lots of slugs in it and they'd virtually licked it clean.

IidentifyasThin · 03/06/2021 20:07

Our grass bins are due for emptying tomorrow morning...i just know I'll forget the racks inside..damn! Grass has been sitting there since last week.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/06/2021 20:13

News to me too.

Giantrooster · 03/06/2021 20:48

Please anyone trying this, could you come back with progress? Smile

HeavenHotel · 04/06/2021 00:41

I think I may even try and put some grass IN the oven, do you think that would clean the doors etc, or is that kicking the ass out it?

I'll post some pics before and after pics, over the weekend.

NeedNewKnees · 04/06/2021 10:25

I tried it overnight.

The compost heap had lots of fresh grass clippings (now that No Mow May is over!) so I popped the shelf in that. Grass underneath and on top.

Result?

A grassy oven shelf. Not noticeably cleaner. Hmm

Maybe it has to be out on the grass and relies on the dew?

ChicChaos · 04/06/2021 10:47

I recommend a hob scraper for glass oven doors, gets them sparkling clean in a couple of minutes.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/06/2021 12:51

@NeedNewKnees the video I found showed the shelves being picked up from lying in long unmown grass.

Ooh interesting.

My next door neighbours haven't cut their grass for weeks and it's really long, do you think they'd notice if I just lobbed my oven shelves into their grass before I go to bed tonight?

There's no fence between our gardens so I could just get up early and hop across and grab them in the morning.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/06/2021 13:49

Ha, might be risky for neighbour relations if they decided today is the day to get the mower out, mower vs oven shelf 😂
