Fence spikes

So we decided to get fence spikes as there have been a spate of robberies. So they arrived and I told DP I would put them up, he said we couldn’t put them up until the warning sticker arrived. Now I didnt know this but it baffles me as to why we have to put up a sticker to warn assholes who are potentially about to commit a crime that they may injure themselves. I can’t believe if we don’t have a sticker and someone who tries to break in injures themselves we are liable? I can’t be the only that thinks it’s a stupid law?

Personally I think they should be illegal.
Get an alarm, or a camera... why harm the local wildlife?

KingdomScrolls · 03/06/2021 01:06

The warning sticker is for people who might have legitimate reason to climb your fence, police, fire brigade etc. Also surely the aim is to stop people climbing your fence rather than to maim any that try?

KingdomScrolls · 03/06/2021 01:07

@StillMedusa a neighbour has them, I see a number of local cats daintily stepping between the spikes 😁

We used to climb everything when we were kids. Perfectly innocent. You know, playing outside, being kids, no video games.

I see your point - we had to put warning signs up when we had dogs, “as burglars may sue”, according to our solicitor. It was never mentioned about emergency services. But I see the reasoning behind that @KingdomScrolls. Not one I had considered!
Personally I think if someone breaks in, as in a burglar, or with nefarious intent and not invited, they deserve all they get, wether that’s a dog bite or bashed by a homeowner.

whatever you think about rough justice, that is not the law in the uk.
so it si as well that you understand possible liabilities, including criminal ones, if you were to attack/seek to injure someone.

OK a story from my youth. A friend of mine became very mentally ill. He believed he was being attacked and stalked by the CIA. He ran for miles, ended up breaking into a farm building. The farmers came out, took him in, reassured him and fed him while emergency services came.

If they'd shot him, or a dog had mauled him or he'd been disemboweled on spikes... would that he cool. I mean TBF he might not have read the sign but he might have.

Bargebill19 · 03/06/2021 01:34

@alexdgr8i would seek to injure someone - but I know that if someone broke in, the adrenaline would mean I would go all out to defend my family.

It’s only on one part Of the fence which is the fence that is connected to the road, the rest of the fence won’t be having spikes on as they are not necessarily a issue. I understand about wildlife but we live in a built up area so only cats, foxes and birds use the fence and the cat comes from next door and the birds won’t land on it as our shed is right next to it. I live in an area which is predominantly elderly people and next to a main road so hardly any kids out playing. I just think it’s a stupid rule especially when burglars are involved.
