Restaurant asked my 12yr old to check in on covid app, AIBU to say no?

Took my 12yr old to wagamamas for lunch today. Checked in on the covid app on entry.

Staff member wanted my 12yr old to download the NHS app or use their own restaurant chain QR code tracking too.

I said no, because I don’t want my 12yr old’s data available to the restaurant and she’s too young for the NHS app anyway.

Staff member got shirty and went off to consult a manager. Who eventually let us in but remained shirty.

Was I BU to say no? Has anyone else experienced this?

Children don’t have to. I was in Starbucks last year and some teenage girls I teach came in. They were asked to check in but didn’t have the app so I said to the staff member, “ can we say they’re with me as I’m their teacher and can contact them if necessary?” He apologised and said under 16s don’t have to check in.

I don’t have the T&T app, restaurants usually just take our name and number or ask to scan their own QR code.

I think asking a child to download an app / scan a code when her parents are there is legally dodgy.

Babynames2 · 03/06/2021 08:20

That's pretty weird, if they wanted kids to sign in surely they'd have to at school too?

No because at schools we have registers anyway, we know which students are in which bubbles.

saraclara · 03/06/2021 08:23

Definitely complain. Especially given that it's clear on their own website that the staff were wrong

ineedaholidaynow · 03/06/2021 08:25

Schools have their own system eg bubbles, seating plans

Ponoka7 · 03/06/2021 08:32

@Katkinsgreyy, I would have complained across SM and via Email on their behalf. That's discriminatory.

Children giving over their details in that way is a safeguarding issue.

Hallyup6 · 03/06/2021 08:44

A lot of 12 year olds won't even have a phone (I know many do but that's not the point), so even if you gave details via paper, who's phone number would you write down? Oh yes, yours. The restaurant is out of line.

I thought the T&Cs of the app limited it to over 16s, but I may have been mistaken.

I went out a few days ago with three other mums (so we also had 3 small babies with us). Only one person in the group was asked for contact details, and it would have been reasonably obvious that we were not one household! This was in Wales.

We had 4 small babies with us. I obviously can't count.

It is mandatory to have the app, I dont with no intention of doing so, I simply leave my contact details.

Ridiculous, I wouldnt be impressed in your shoes.

FilthyforFirth · 03/06/2021 08:52

*isn't

MissyB1 · 03/06/2021 08:53

Ridiculous! even I don’t have the app, I sign in to whatever book they have instead.

millymoo1202 · 03/06/2021 08:54

It’s all persons in party over 16, either qr code or written down. Try thinking of the people having to ask for this information on minimum wage, it’s relentless the abuse, just do it please as it’s here to stay and if I’m honest i don’t care what your excuse is as onus is on you not me!

loulouljh · 03/06/2021 08:54

No-one needs to check in on it. i don't have the app and never have. Didn't know anywhere was even still doing this now..

Leonardsgirl · 03/06/2021 09:00

Everywhere I've been recently it's been mandatory for all adults to check in individually, and it's been enforced. From museums, to restaurants, to pubs. Different to previously when they were happy with one per party. Not necessary for children though.

Redwinestillfine · 03/06/2021 09:34

The mandatory thing has zero basis in law though. Yes they can ask for details bit they can't make anyone download the app.

Everywhere I've been are doing it but some are stricter than others.

Some are still insisting on no cash, too, but I suspect that has more to do with not wanting the hassle of going to the bank than covid now.
