I am a cleaner. This morning I went into clients house with my cleaning caddy full of its usual stuff. I had £40 a 20 and 2 10's folded inside each other and pushed down the side of one of the products that I don't take out of caddy. The money was there as I checked this morning and was there as I entered the house.

I left the caddy on the kitchen table and proceeded to work in the living room. One of the 2 occupants arrived back and was in the kitchen for about 10 minutes. They then went upstairs.

I took products in and out of caddy throughout the clean.

Caddy was also left on landing floor as I cleaned main bathroom, with door closed. Again occupant was up and down stairs past caddy.

The floors were done last and everywhere was clear. I lifted my payment off the kitchen table, put in the caddy and left. Put caddy straight into boot and drove home.

Ate lunch, went out to check caddy for next clean and only today's payment in it. The other £40 had gone.

What would you do. WIBU to ask if they seen it in house lying around or would that look like I'm accusing them. As I said I do the floors last and everything was clear.

Ask if they’ve seen it as it “must have dropped out but you’re not sure where”

That’s awful if one of them stole it

Pinpointer · 02/06/2021 18:08

Definitely ask. Even if they take it as your accusing them your going to not feel 100% comfortable working there if it’s not just located on a landing somewhere.

JellyTumble · 02/06/2021 18:11

Why do you leave money out like that? Lesson learnt: don’t just leave money where people can grab it.

But yes, ask in a non-accusatory way. Say you must have dropped it when getting a product out and ask if they’ve seen it.

BlueDucky · 02/06/2021 18:13

I'd ask in a "just checking to see if it fell out at yours" way.

Tootsey11 · 02/06/2021 18:14

I don't leave it out. I keep it folded in caddy for change for clients. Often even though people know I'm coming round they never have the right money, so carry a small amount in notes.

You just cannot leave money unattended. World we live in.

By “out” I meant unattended. You can’t do that.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/06/2021 18:21

Try a breezy text asking them to check the floors, landing for you "whilst you pull up the carpets from your car"

2bazookas · 02/06/2021 18:21

Tell client " I accidentally dropped £40 cash in your house, could you find out who's keeping it for me please",

WorraLiberty · 02/06/2021 18:21

You could ask but just make sure you do it in a really non accusatory way.

They might've found it and assumed it was theirs.

As an aside, why don't you clients just pay you online?

WorraLiberty · 02/06/2021 18:22

@2bazookas

Tell client " I accidentally dropped £40 cash in your house, could you find out who's keeping it for me please",
Could've been dropped on the way to the car though
Sometimesfraught82 · 02/06/2021 18:23

If my cleaner asked I wouldn’t bat and eyelid

Sometimesfraught82 · 02/06/2021 18:24

@2bazookas

Tell client " I accidentally dropped £40 cash in your house, could you find out who's keeping it for me please",
That’s a little odd to be honest.
Sometimesfraught82 · 02/06/2021 18:25

Hi, sorry to bother with this but could you keep an eye out for £40 cash that I think slipped out of my caddy this morning whilst at yours. Thanks and see you next week”

AmandaHoldensLips · 02/06/2021 18:26

Deffo ask. Tell them it was 2 tenners and a 20 folded up together and it must have dropped out of your caddy.

Then never leave money in your caddy again.

jojododobobo · 02/06/2021 18:26

Awful if they did take it but without proof is it worth souring your relationship for? It would be really weird for them to take it because you would have known that it went missing in their house and therefore suspect them, also I would assume people who can afford a cleaner arnt desperately short of cash? Its not the best place to keep money and could easily have fallen out. Perhaps invest in a bum bag or keep your change in the car in future?

Sorry you had a shitty day though! Nothing worse than essentially working for free! Thanks

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 02/06/2021 18:27

I think I'd say something like, "I dropped some money at yours yesterday, if you find it could you let me know please? Thanks." But I would find it hugely uncomfortable so I don't envy you, OP.

BelleBlueBell · 02/06/2021 18:28

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking if anyone has picked it up as you think it might have fallen out of your caddy.

Is the occupant you refer to a child?

Leftphalange · 02/06/2021 18:28

Yanbu to ask.

JoveWhenHeSawMyFannysFace · 02/06/2021 18:29

I’d ask - it’s possible it just fell out and the occupant picked it up thinking someone else in the household had dropped it

spaceghett0 · 02/06/2021 18:29

The thing is that maybe it just fell out someone. It doesn't sound as though it was especially secure. I think you need to ask in a really none accusatory way because they genuinely might not know anything about it and you risk ruining your relationship with the client.

spaceghett0 · 02/06/2021 18:30

Somewhere, not someone *

MrMeeseekslookatme · 02/06/2021 18:34

I'd ask. Just say you've mislaid some money, would they mind checking to see if you dropped it in their house?

Thymeout · 02/06/2021 18:46

Why do pp have to lecture the Op on what she should or should not have done?

She knows that now. There can't be many people who haven't lost money at some time, who wish they'd done something differently.

Op. It's just about possible that you dropped the notes and the resident picked them up thinking they belonged to someone in the house. Plenty of non-accusatory queries above. Hope the money is found.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 02/06/2021 18:50

"Hello, I seem to have lost £40 in cash during my last job. Can you please have a look around in case it fell out from my caddy in your house? Thank you."
