To go on a home makeover TV show?

CraicMammy · 02/06/2021 16:38

Considering it as I would love a colourful home, but no natural talent for doing the shopping / planning / organising myself.

If you’ve been on a show, are you glad you did, or do you regret the experience?

Is it normal that the homeowner pays for all the materials and furniture etc?

Thank you!

What a lovely advert for burglars it would be. I'd never go on such a show.

PersonaNonGarter · 02/06/2021 17:23

Definitely go on! That’s a great idea. Not sure why it would make you vulnerable to burglary unless you are asking where to hang the Canaletto....

AddisonMontgomeryShepherd · 02/06/2021 17:24

I can't give any advice but have always wanted to know this! Blush

WildWestWanda · 02/06/2021 17:26

I know someone who went on one of the home makeover shows. The makeover looked fab on the screen but the quality of the work done was really poor. She had to get someone in to rectify a few things.

Nah, burglars don't break in because you've got a new style kitchen or green paint in your bedroom 🤣🤣

@CraicMammy. I guess they each have some perks, I'd like to go on the one with Angela Scanlon. With the vision glasses! Or Love It or List It with Kirsty & Phil.

Go for it!! But yes, you'll need a chunk of money to spend!

CraicMammy · 02/06/2021 17:36

The Angela Scanlon one is so funny, when they pretend to be looking at the new house, but have taken the goggles off when they do so.

The thing about burglars is a fair point, luckily we have nothing worth nicking!

@WildWestWanda which show did your friend go on?

Is it changing rooms? Are you thinking of going on that?!

I can't wait for it to be back on, I hope it's as bonkers as it was in the 90s!

CraicMammy · 02/06/2021 19:11

Ha ha! No it’s not Changing Rooms - I saw Laurence LB in our local Dobbies at the weekend and nearly asked him for his advice, but it was really hot so I’d didn’t bother him!

He was wearing a black face mask and looked like Zorro

Oh shame OP, that would have been amazing. I remember years ago them doing random things like glueing chairs to walls and there was that one episode where they smashed that ladies teapots.

MaMaLa321 · 02/06/2021 19:55

we were on the Great British Interior Design Challenge, and another mner was on previously.
It was really interesting to see a programme being made, and the people were lovely as well.
The quality of the work was pretty shoddy, but they did provide 2 workman to do a day of snagging afterwards.
Some of the ideas were really good, and, 5 years on, we still have them. Others weren't brilliant and have been painted over or removed.
Go for it! You've got nothing to lose.

MaMaLa321 · 02/06/2021 19:57

..and we didn't pay for anything. They had a budget of £1k per room and, to be honest, I don't see how they spent it all, as it was IKEA'd to the max.

CraicMammy · 02/06/2021 22:59

LOVED the GBIDC! This is just going to be fairly superficial interior design (no walls being knocked down) so hopefully nothing that can’t be fixed 🤞

Oh god, the teapots....”please take care of my teapots, they are of great sentimental value”

Half an hour later, terrible crash and sound of breaking china....

Must have been everyone’s worst nightmare.

PeggyArmstrong · 03/06/2021 01:15

I wouldn't consider it these days.

You can't control how they edit it and most of these make over (any reality type) shows now value drama over actual content.

So unless you are prepared to risk appearing as a total harpy on TV because you disagreed with some tosser that thought that painting your entire house (including every stick of furniture) in luminous/bile green because it is the 'in' colour I would maybe look online to get some ideas about colours and styles that YOU love.

ExitChasedByABee · 03/06/2021 01:24

Might be better to do the work yourself. You could google or check Houzz for inspiration. Alternatively, I think there are Interior Design students that you could ask? They might want to build their portfolio so hopefully you should be able to get a good price.

DaisyDreaming · 03/06/2021 01:44

I’ve heard there’s often poor workman ship which causes issues later

StillCoughingandLaughing · 03/06/2021 09:00

The show doesn’t tend to give out the participants’ full addresses and a list of times when they’ll be out either. Granted, if you live in a very distinctive house in a three-street village, someone might be able to find you, but if it’s a three-bed semi in Watford or Reading, you’ll probably be safe from the man in a stripy top with a swag bag.

Pinkylemons · 03/06/2021 09:03

I wouldn’t do it. When I see them paint wet plaster it makes me cringe. I can’t imagine what it looks like close up!

Yes, yes, it’s a well known fact burglars sit and watch home make over shows to see who to target, they particularly like homes under the hammer 😂
StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 03/06/2021 09:14

I found teapot incident on YouTube! Poor woman though, do you think the bbc compensated her for her teapot collection being ruined?!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 03/06/2021 09:19

I can’t believe anyone ever thought it was a good idea! Even if they hadn’t overloaded the shelves, all it would take was someone running out in a rush or a sudden gust of wind when the windows were open to send the lot flying to the ground!

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 03/06/2021 09:32

I like to imagine it was actually a liberation for her once she got over the shock. Sometimes these collections happen by accident - “Oh, Doris likes teapots, let’s get her another one” - and people get rather tied to them.

In reality she’s probably still sad about it.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 03/06/2021 09:41

I'm guessing the lovely brown/yellow striped paint was their doing as well?

Poor lady!

Auntienumber8 · 03/06/2021 09:48

One of the nursery nurses at my sons nursery was on a make over show. It would have been about 15 years ago and was on BBC but I can’t remember the name. I just think it seemed so intrusive. They did do a good job of her house which was a small terrace.
