How much do you spend on adult family gifts?

Just browsing for my brother (impossible to buy for) and asking friends for suggestions, they said really expensive stuff like car experiences or a meal out with his girlfriend.

In my family, aduls spend in the ballpark range of £10-20 on each other’s gifts. There are 8 adults who buy for each other in my family.

We all earn average salaries (£20-£40K).

What do others with a similar income spend on gifts?

£30 or thereabouts

honeygirlz · 02/06/2021 12:41

About £10. I'm very good at finding bargains!

What does DB usually get you? If he's spending £10ish and expecting you to get him expensive stuff then he's a CF twat! Don't encourage this shit.

Toilenstripes · 02/06/2021 12:41

£35 on birthday and £35 on Christmas. But that’s only for Bil and SIL. Quite comfortable incomes and all in early 50s.

Shoxfordian · 02/06/2021 12:42

I spend much more on my parents than dh spends on his. He usually spends 30-50 on them all though. Maybe you could get your brother an Amazon voucher or something?

CMOTDibbler · 02/06/2021 12:42

Dhs family don't do adult birthday presents at all, so thats easy! His parents give us £20 in a card

SweatyBetty20 · 02/06/2021 12:43

£20 give or take a couple of quid. I worked out my presents budget for the year for everyone for Xmas and b’days, divided it by 12, and put that much in a Monzo saving pot every month.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 02/06/2021 12:46

The only adult family I have left are my 2 Dsis's so I spend about £100 on each.

DH is much more.

Namechangedandoverwhelmed · 02/06/2021 12:47

Thanks. Yes vouchers, books, CDs/DVDs (back in the day!) are the sort of thing we’d get each other. I’m just a bit stuck this year and he hasn’t got back to me with an idea for what he wants! It might end up being a voucher and some sweets...

Christmas, £50-100
Birthdays the £20-40 mark

bravotango · 02/06/2021 12:48

£20-30, closer to £50 for parents

SwimBaby · 02/06/2021 12:56

Christmas, nothing on my sibling but we have a meal out together. I spend about £40 on my DM.

Birthdays I spend about £40 to £50 on mu DM and either nothing on my DB or a bottle of whiskey or champagne I’d were meeting up for a meal or a BBQ.
My DH stopped presents for his siblings about 20 years ago.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/06/2021 12:57

Nothing apart from the couple of quid it costs to buy them a card!

Namechangedandoverwhelmed · 02/06/2021 12:58

I do spend a bit more on mum tbf if there’s something more expensive I know she’d like x

Brother and sil around £20-30
Parents £20-30 each for bdays and £80-100 between them at Christmas.
Husband spends about £10 on each of his adult family.

Sceptre86 · 02/06/2021 13:02

£50 for birthdays for my siblings. I spend about the same on my parents. Dh only has the one brother and he spends about the same.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/06/2021 13:05

We only do gifts for adults at Christmas and spend anything between £15 to £30 depending on the person and their likes.

Lou573 · 02/06/2021 13:12

Between £40 -£60 on my side, oh spend about £20-£30 on his. I top up my mum’s if there’s something she’d really like as she saves us a fortune on childcare.

NoSquirrels · 02/06/2021 13:17

£25-£40

Sometimes more on my sister and parents, if I know they’d love something. My side of the family is quite easy-going with gifts though so could spend less and it be fine. My DH’s side is a bit more focused on a showy gift, but there’s less of them so it’s not too big an issue.

mamawithfive · 02/06/2021 13:21

We don’t.
We buy for our parents, spending around 50 on each.
They’ll buy for us - a similar amount.
We used to buy grandparents a token gift for birthdays and Christmas - my grandparents loved a giant bar of dairy milk and some good tea bags!

Don’t buy for siblings - only their children and only up to age 18.

Journeylikenomother · 02/06/2021 13:26

£20 - £30 for birthdays.... Though I have one BIL & wife (who earn more than the rest of us) but never reciprocate! We're lucky to get a birthday text!

Daisy829 · 02/06/2021 13:33

About £30 for DB & SIL more like £80-100 for my mum, £40 on my dad. I should spend less really.

Bargebill19 · 02/06/2021 13:40

I would say nothing. They all earn enough to buy what they want. A nice card and a message to say happy birthday etc would suffice.
I would buy something for someone on a much lower wage who is financially struggling to meet the basic necessities.

WellLarDeDar · 02/06/2021 13:41

Normal birthdays & Christmas £10-20 per person, big birthdays up to £100. We prefer to focus on having a nice time together. Plus at Christmas if you buy presents for a lot of people it adds up quickly. I suppose if we had kids we might spend a bit more on them as Christmas and Birthdays are a bigger deal for children but for adults we keep things simple.
