to think you don't need a whole day off to get your Covid jab?

In brief, someone promised to send me something by the end of last week. I sent a (polite) reminder email on Friday and got a reply from their boss to say this person was out of the office all day getting their vaccination. I know some people have had to travel longish distances and queue for ages to get their jab, but do you really need to take a whole day off?
I should add, today is Wednesday and they still haven't sent what they promised.

I've booked my jab on a Saturday morning specifically so that I can (hopefully) have any side effects out of the way by Monday morning.

If I'd have had to book it on a weekday I would definitely have taken the day off as holiday unless I was having it e.g at 4pm.

gingerbiscuit19 · 02/06/2021 11:52

I always have loads of holiday to take. I'd probably just take the whole day as leave rather than interrupting the working day going for an appointment. Absolutely nothing to do with you.

BlueDucky · 02/06/2021 12:08

I'd be really annoyed if my boss had shared my medical information

BooGhoosty · 02/06/2021 12:11

The centre I had my vaccine at is a 20 min drive from home, and door to door I was out of the house for 4.5 hours!

Between the queue to get into the car park, the queue for the jab which they were very behind appointment time on, and then the having to sit afterwards, I ended up being off work half the day.

IntermittentParps · 02/06/2021 12:14

YANBU. It's weird. Surely if anything you want the next day off?

Bubblemonkey · 02/06/2021 12:20

I had mine at 930am, had started feeling ropey come 12 midday. It all depends how they respond to it 🥴

Comefromaway · 02/06/2021 12:22

After seeing the reaction my boss got after having his jab (jabbed on Thursday and ill Friday and Saturday) and also my daughter who was sent home from college ill I booked 2 days off for my jab. The appointment came through at very short notice so I didn;t have time to plan.

Peppapeg · 02/06/2021 12:27

So the issue is that the work hasn't been done and you keep getting fobbed off rather than them having the day for the jab.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 02/06/2021 12:32

I was fine with my first, had to go straight back to work after my second and was quite pissed off to find out that within an hour, I felt like utter crap. I then dragged myself through the next couple of days.

Few weeks later, work is full of people taking 2-3 days off for side effects after a half day to travel to vaccination hubs. Kind of wish I'd called in sick, really, as I wasn't well enough to be any good at what I did for those days.

So I don't think they're necessarily taking the piss about the day off. But not providing the work by the deadline is separate to that.

This. DH had a bad reaction to his so I waited a few weeks before booking mine so that I could get a 9:15 slot on a Saturday morning. That way I had the whole weekend to recover and hopefully get the worst of any reaction over before work on Monday.

Surely the sensible thing to do is book your slot for a day when you wouldn't normally work? Unless slots are really limited in your area, it makes sense not to eat into the working day for something that is available at times outside most people's working hours.

Fair enough if your reaction is then really bad and necessitates time off work for that reason (DH was ill for 3/4 days) but I do wonder whether some people are just using the Covid jab as an excuse to get a free day off.

Geamhradh · 02/06/2021 12:35

@Bellyups

The issue is the fact it’s Wednesday and they haven’t provided what you requested. Not that they took a whole day off for the vaccine
This. Quite a lot of people I know have taken the full day off, and in the case of hub max-vax days, there can be a big wait. For my second, I was there about 4 hours.
Pickledpenguin · 02/06/2021 12:37

My friend took the full day off for her second one so she could go out and get pissed afterwards in celebration. I thought it was a great idea till I remembered I have a child. Her name is Karen too as it happens...

MadeOfStarStuff · 02/06/2021 12:42

The reason for them taking a day off is completely irrelevant and tbh none of your business. The issue is that they haven’t done what they promised. YANBU to be annoyed about that but YABU to care about the time they take for a covid jab

randomlyLostInWales · 02/06/2021 12:44

Expecting a bad reaction - headaches and trideness or slight fever have been universal in our family to AZ vaccine first dose.

Though maybe it's the employer - DSis had to take entire day because her employer wouldn't let her take a hour off she needed to get it.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 02/06/2021 12:45

TBF, I had mine at 9am and was in bed with chills and a headache by 11am.
But the manager shouldn't have disclosed why she was out of office. A message saying "X is out of the office today. She will reply to this on her return tomorrow" would have sufficed. I would be pissed off if my manager went into details about why I was out of office.
Regardless, none of that is the issue, hope they send it ASAP.

RedcurrantPuff · 02/06/2021 12:46

Taking a whole day off is taking the piss, I don’t doubt that some people have been pretty unwell afterwards but this vaccine has really been the skivers and drama llamas gift. That said it doesn’t sound like it’s your businesss

Greenandcabbagelooking · 02/06/2021 12:47

Actually getting the jab is quick but before that I need to:

Walk to station
Get train
Find vaccination clinic
Wait
Get jab
Wait
Do journey in reverse

So I can see it taking 3 hours or so. By that point, you might as well have the whole day off.

Lockheart · 02/06/2021 12:58

Using annual leave (for whatever reason) is not skiving.
newnortherner111 · 02/06/2021 13:01

The same probably is done by the person for dental appointments at the time that means longest away from the office, and they are probably the first to bleat if you were two days late in providing something.

FunnyWonder · 02/06/2021 13:11

The person's boss had no business telling you why an employee wasn't at work. If they haven't done their job properly, that's a separate issue.

IntermittentParps · 02/06/2021 13:25

So I can see it taking 3 hours or so. By that point, you might as well have the whole day off.
Really? What if you work 8, 10, 12 hours in a day?

jellybeansforbreakfast · 02/06/2021 13:55

So, the job was to be with you by last Friday.

They booked Friday off, the reason is immaterial.

They didn't get the job to you last Thursday

Bank Holiday weekend

They didn't get the job to you yesterday

And now, half way through Wednesday, they still have not got it to you. and are not giving you anything concrete to go on

YANBU and yes, you REALLy do need to escalate this.

Pickledpenguin · 02/06/2021 13:56

I fail to see why it is anyones business why someone would take time off work no matter what the reason. We work, we pay our taxes, we can take our annual leave as we like so if this person took a bloody fortnight off due to getting vaccinated it is absolutely nobodys business. Be pissed off that you still did not get the work done but certainly do not query why someone takes their leave the way they do.

RevolutionRadio · 02/06/2021 14:06

They should obviously have discussed the deadline with you before now but they may have booked the day off due to the side effects, I wish I had of done I felt awful for a few days after mine.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/06/2021 16:01

We are all given a day off for it if we want it.
That's between an employee and their employer and none of your business really.
