Safe refuges for women and children

AIBU in thinking that for women getting out of violent and controlling relationships with men should be able to access refuges and hostels that do not have men as workers or residents, including those identifying as women?

@Soontobe60 I agree, that’s appalling. But it’s not a refuge which is a totally different process.

For me when I was in a refuge the main thing was feeling safe, physically but also safe to be myself (even if I wasn’t sure who that was at the time). I didn’t like to be left alone with any men really especially ones I didn’t know even police officers so I never was. I can’t say if someone born male but identifying as female would have been a trigger for me personally as there was no one working there at the time who was. They were all women. I don’t know about now. Female only spaces are important but I think there should be most focus on more refuge spaces that are safe in general. There aren’t enough of them and the tories have decimated these lifesaving places further by cutting funding so drastically.

The staff working in a refuge will try to build a therapeutic relationship with those staying there

It’s a completely different relationship you have with someone in an emergency setting

Many of these women fear men and struggle to form trusting relationships they don’t need to be tested on this

YANBU op

Apparently we have suddenly evolved in the last few years so now some women have a penis. Or rather some men are so entrenched in their own male privilege they are unable to relate to the very sex they claim to now be
