To really dislike my Magimix?

Catslovepies · 31/05/2021 19:29

I bought a Magimix 5200Xl last year. It cost over £300 quid which I think is a huge amount but I thought it would be worth it as the reviews are so good. Now I wish I had returned it. I find myself avoiding using it because it's such a hassle to clean. I like to make sauces and dressings and for that I would use the small bowl. But when I use it everything spills into the medium and large bowls and I end up having to wash every single part of the mixer. I also don't find it gets things perfectly smooth. Does anyone else have these issues and any tips on how to resolve them?

Why not sell it on eBay?

FillerAngel · 31/05/2021 19:32

It can all go in the dishwasher if you have one. If you don’t, then yes, wow; how annoying.

Mandsy100 · 31/05/2021 19:32

The cleaning up and bulkiness is exactly what put me off. I'll just stick to my nutribullet.

LtGreggs · 31/05/2021 19:34

I'm similar - I have never really fallen in love with it.

All the bowls need cleaning after you just use the small bowl. The plastic bowls & lids are not meant to go in the dishwasher. I said ffs to that, stuck them in, and after a year or so the plastic went brittle (my own fault - but honestly who thought that design through Confused). It's not good for dough - kind of too powerful? OK at cake but mixing an all in one sponge with a blade does not get it as airy as with a hand whisk.

If you have mainly grated or mandolin based food prep needs, it's probably the business.

Yes I should ebay it. But it weighs a tonne.

TimeForTeaAndG · 31/05/2021 19:36

I don't think I have the same make/model but ai also have one of those mixers that looks awesome but spills into the med and large bowls. And it can't be put through the dry cycle of the dishwasher (who knows when to stop the washer before the dry!?)

My resolution is to have hidden it in the cupboard and bought a small bowl blender with removable whisker handle. I will then hope that DH isn't too bothered if I sell the mixer at some point that I buuuuugged him about for ages to get me for Xmas!

AngeloMysterioso · 31/05/2021 19:36

My magimix couldn’t be easier to clean... a few drops of fairy liquid, warm water, put it on the cleaning setting a couple of times, rinse, done.

YoComoManzanas · 31/05/2021 19:36

Yes. I dislike mine too. Dh bought me one for Christmas a few years ago even though I had a much cheaper kenwood one on my list.
You can't store the attachments in it, they come in a bulky case which takes up half a cupboard. Can only use the big bowl really because the small ones need to be inside each other to work and just spill into each other. Really crap design. I end up using the smoothie maker or the hand blender instead. Unless it's a big batch cook or something.

Catslovepies · 31/05/2021 19:37

I'm actually thinking about buying a nutribullet, Mandsy100. Do you like yours and find it's easy to clean? Does it get things really smooth? I read a review that said they can get mouldy in places that are hard to clean and that kind of put me off.

I do have a dishwasher thank goodness, FillerAngel. I just hate taking so much space in it just to make a simple sauce!

Don't really hate it quite enough to sell it on eBay as I do use it occasionally.

Oh gd I thought I was the only one! We got given one (unasked for) by an extremely generous family member and had to get rid of it as it was one of the shittest pieces of equipment I've ever used.

  1. It's huge and came with a thousand accessories most of which I didn't understand how to use
  2. the ones I did figure out how to use (eg potato masher) was crap and didn't work properly
  3. THE SPILLAGE - sorry for all caps but honestly this was the dumbest design I've ever seen in my life. As you say, there's no option to use just the one small bowl and if you do all three end up getting dirty and needing to be cleaned. WTF.

In the end I sold it and bought a £40 Ninja blender which I love and would marry if you could marry kitchen appliances.

FrogFairy · 31/05/2021 20:08

For sauces and dressings you might find a Bamix stick blender useful plus easy peasy to clean.

WithIcePlease · 31/05/2021 20:11

I've got a magimix and a small cheap food processor. I use the small one way more, especially now as not doing family batch cooks as I once was. Even if doing a load of sofrito I use smaller one. I use the magimix now for coleslaw mainly due to the bulk of it.
DD asked for a nutribullet for smoothies after GCSE's so I bought it, completely thinking it a waste of space. How wrong I was!! I love it. I use it to blend ginger, garlic, chillies, tomatoes etc for curry, making breadcrumbs, making hummus, blending dressings. It's absolutely super. I've bought another for DD now she's left home and use it to cook there too. I can't recommend it highly enough. Super easy to clean - dishwasher or whizz some water round it.
Mine is 8 years old now. It's less powerful than the top of the range of current nutribullet but I can't see need for pricier ones with more power tbh

Lemonwoe · 31/05/2021 20:27

So glad i read this: had been thinking about investing in a magimix as I batch cook loads. Think I’ll just be sticking with my 10 year old £30 kenwood processor

Member589500 · 31/05/2021 20:36

Bought one a few weeks ago and think it was that model but paid even more than that. Just looked and Amazon have the cream one I bought for £320 but other colours £245.
Agree with every word! It’s good at coleslaw. Apart from that I can’t be bothered with it. I just don’t cook the type of food it might be good at making.
I thought I was missing the point of it but see I’m not the only one.
Getting rid!

WithIcePlease · 31/05/2021 20:38

Re blending - I also have a stick blender but prefer soup maker as it's smoother and I've never fancied putting hot soup in a blender attachment

movingstars · 31/05/2021 20:45

Another disappointed owner. Even for coleslaw it "misses" the final bits so I end up having to fish out chucks of cabbage, cabbage etc.

Much prefer my stick blender with mini chopper attachment.

Mandsy100 · 01/06/2021 09:28

NB just has 2 parts and I put both in the dishwasher. I'm not sure if you meant to but I have been doing this for 7years. I have a high powered one and it blends brilliantly. Who has the time and space to be washing up.

TimeForTeaAndG · 01/06/2021 10:53

Having just melted a heat-treated water bottle in the dishwasher yesterday I'll not be risking anything I'm not 100% sure about. Also, we only have a slimline dishwasher so the top gets filled with cups and glasses, just don't have the space for 3 mixer bowls every time.

StrawberrySquash · 01/06/2021 13:46

I like mine but the small bowls are useless. I only ever use the big one. I use it for slaw and pastry and biscuits and blending soup. Also salsas/pestos, chopping onion or mushrooms very finely. But no it isn't perfect at all.

StrawberrySquash · 01/06/2021 13:46

Also hopeless for meringue. Electric hand or stand mixer all the way for those.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 01/06/2021 13:52

Yes, I don't dislike mine as much as you, but the spilling between bowls is really annoying if you're using liquids. I've got a thermomix now, so it's mostly been relegated for just grating, and it's too bulky to justify keeping for only that, so I'll be selling it, and replacing either with a smaller, cheaper processor, or just a mandolin (which is probably the better choice, but I don't really trust myself to keep all my fingers!)
