Kids going on holiday to Amber list country...

ExH is insisting he is still going ahead with taking DDs (10 and 8) on holiday in august to USA. He's applied for their passports and insists they're going.

Right now it's an Amber list country.

AIBU to say they can't go?

Eldest DD doesn't want to go because she understands the rules etc.

I'm happy for them to go next year if the rules allow. I'm just not happy that they are seriously still pressing ahead with a holiday when it's non-essential.

(Nc as other stuff I post would be obvious to my colleagues I know are on here!)

it is highly likely it’ll be green by then.

Parker231 · 31/05/2021 10:15

The US aren’t granting ESTA’s so they won’t be able to go unless this changes.

DinosaurDiana · 31/05/2021 10:17

He shouldn’t take them against their wishes.
And any fall out from going should be on him. So if they need to isolate on return etc he does that, you shouldn’t have to take time off work etc.

I should have said their father is an American citizen (by birth, only visits every few years). The girls only gave British passports though.

Realistically then, he will be allowed in but they won't

This. There seems to be misunderstanding about the traffic light share . Just because we deem them as an acceptable Covid risk ie amber, doesn’t mean they’re actually accepting anyone in. Although who knows what the situation will be in August.

Allllchange · 31/05/2021 10:21

Is he going to supervise their isolation once back in Britain? Yes it doesn't have to be a hotel but feels a little unfair if he then expects you to be unable to go out at all when they get back because they can't go out for two weeks/10 days/whatever it is by then...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/05/2021 10:22

Wouldn't bother me if he was going to deal with them having to isolate on return.

itwa · 31/05/2021 10:22

Is he getting them US passports to allow this to go ahead?

notanotherusernameidea · 31/05/2021 10:24

He seems to think he can pay for the quick tests which means no isolation.

He's made no mention of the return quarantine and there's no way myself or my husband can do 10 days off work for it. Plus it's end of august they are apparently going so isolation would go right up into return to school date.

ExH is making me seem entirely unreasonable so just want some unbiased perspective!

Agree with PP - I doubt they will be able to go, but I would tell him he has to facilitate their quarantine when they return if they do go.

I wouldn't worry too much OP - it's unlikely to happen. Is he the type to enjoy winding you up?

notanotherusernameidea · 31/05/2021 10:26

@itwa

Is he getting them US passports to allow this to go ahead?

They're not entitled to them (thankfully). Although he has a US passport (and British, dual nationality) he doesn't meet the criteria to get the kids US passports too.

Doesn't he need your permission to get their passports?

DinosaurDiana · 31/05/2021 10:27

So will they be back for first day back at school ? If not it would be a no from me.

Not so much winding me up on purpose, just very selfish and doesn't think of consequences.

Doesn't he need your permission to get their passports?

Nope, I've always thought it's madness but technically either parent can apply, doesn't need both parents consent.

Is he "going on holiday" or visiting his family?

Your kids will get an esta. American citizens and their family are allowed in

The usa doesn't have a quarantine requirement

The only problem would be the 10 days here in the uk upon return.

Usa will probably be green by then.

Encourage him to wait until restrictions change and book last minute

Travel Health insurance might be a problem

LaMontser · 31/05/2021 10:29

He can only pay for quick tests to release from isolation on day five. So he’s going to have to do five days at least. It is also entirely possible that the USA and lots of other amber countries will actually be on the red list soon as amber is a total balls to manage.

dreamingbohemian · 31/05/2021 10:30

He can take his children in if he's a US citizen

He says it's visiting family but it's distant cousins, both his parents and grandparents live over here now and have done for years.

Is he applying for American passports for them? Just a thought …..
I’d say they can go if they want BUT he deals with isolation / testing etc and returns the kids when finished as long as that’s all in school holidays.

notanotherusernameidea · 31/05/2021 10:31

Basically the kids can get in based on his status as a US passport holder so I'm not worried about that.

His attitude is the airline haven't cancelled the flights so they're ok to go Hmm

OP posts:
notanotherusernameidea · 31/05/2021 10:33

By his working, they can go, get the 5 day test and be back in time to return to school 2 days later. So factually it's do-able.

Eldest DD does not want to go, that should be enough.

socalledfriend · 31/05/2021 10:37

OK. I still think he needs your permission to take the children abroad though?
