Cough help!

I know I'm posting in the wrong place but I really need some advice. 2 yo DS has woken up with an awful cough, from dr google I gather he has croup as it is a very distinctive sounding cough.

However his breathing is very shallow and he is struggling to take in a deep breath. There is a slight pull in around his ribs when breathing in. He ended up in hospital last year with a cough because of a wheeze that wasn't getting better and they guessed that he probably had baby asthma (obviously too young to be properly diagnosed).

I have rung 111 and they said someone will call me back this morning. If it were you would you wait for this call or take him up to the hospital?

Take him to hospital.

Your 2 year old can’t breathe properly… take him to A&E

SultanOfSwing · 31/05/2021 05:40

If he is struggling to breathe, call an ambulance.

wandawaves · 31/05/2021 05:42

Your child is struggling to breathe? Call an ambulance! Confused

KM38 · 31/05/2021 05:49

@thismummylovescake I’m honestly not sure why this is even a question. You’ve just said your 2 year old is struggling to take a proper breath. He 100% needs to be at the hospital!

oscarandelliesdad · 31/05/2021 05:51

Call an ambulance

thismummylovescake · 31/05/2021 05:52

Just sat in a&e now

I know, and trust me I feel like a complete idiot for even asking now. As soon as I posted I changed my mind and hit him straight in the car and we are now in a&e. Completely bad mum moment on my part!

@thismummylovescake Glad you’ve got him to A&E. hopefully they get him sorted out quickly 🤞🏼

Good call op. Sometimes you need outside voices to help you clarify your thoughts. Hoping he is on the mend soon x

SultanOfSwing · 31/05/2021 06:18

You’re not a bad mum - you’re a good one, and your son is in the best place. I hope he is better and home again very soon.

Covidatemyhomework · 31/05/2021 06:18

Glad you’re in hospital OP. I had this with my DD a few years ago. Took her to the GP (pre Covid when you could actually see one) and the GP took one look at her, listened to her chest, checked her oxygen SATs and immediately called an ambulance. She was admitted for 36 hours while they brought it under control. Croup is generally unpleasant but mild, but sometimes it get turn nasty . I hope you’re DS gets better quickly.

Not sure if this will be seen but hopefully someone might know. In the hospital they gave DS some steroids and once his breathing was back to normal we could go home. Since then the cough and breathing has been much better. Still coughing but nothing like before. However he still won't really eat anything. He normally absolutely loves his food and eats everything on his plate (then will cry if he can't have more lol) but he's just not interested in food at all.
No temp and pretty normal in himself, a bit grouchier than normal maybe. Is this all normal after croup?

@thismummylovescake Glad the coughing and breathing is much better OP! Don’t have any experience with the food but I’m commenting to bump it for you and hopefully others will see it 😊
