To ask them to pay for a new ring

I finally decided to take my wedding and engagement ring to get altered as they haven't fit since I had my second DC. I took them to a well known high street jewellers. I was told it would take 10 days. Three weeks after dropping them off I finally get a call to say they are ready. They told me they would both be resized, re plated (white gold) and cleaned. I tried the engagement ring on and it looked brand new and fitted perfectly so I was very happy. They then got the wedding ring out, it looked brand new. I tried it on and couldn't get it over my knuckle, the lady checked the receipt and realised they had cleaned it and re plated it but had forgotten to resize it so I was told it would be sent of again for free.
Two days after picking my engagement ring up and I realised the band has snapped at the back, obviously very angry I take it back on and they apologise and say they will send it off to be fixed and will give me a full refund.
Get a call back two days ago to tell my my wedding band is ready to pick up. Still doesn't feel like it has been altered to the right size but by this point I don't want to send it off again so I take it home. Had it on 24 hours, just taken it off and my finger has turned green/black underneath the ring. This has never happened in the 7 years I've had it.
Now I'm angry that they have also ruined my wedding ring. I'm guessing it hasn't been re plated properly. Would it be unreasonable for me to ask them to replace my ring?

I think you should get it repaired for free but I think you would be unreasonable to expect them to replace it, especially as they are repairing the other one and giving you a full refund. I also don’t think a replacement would feel as meaningful as the original so I’d rather it was mended that replaced.

Surly if it’s turned your finger green it’s not the same ring and can’t possibly be gold?

lunar1 · 30/05/2021 21:14

I don't think it's the same ring, you don't get that reaction from gold.

Wheresallthesleepgone · 30/05/2021 21:26

It is the same ring, it's a unique type of ring so I know it would be hard to replicate. I've read online that apparently this can happen if they use a cheap metal suck as nickel to re plate it. I would 100% the ring be put back to its original state so that it doesn't stain my finger but I'm worried this isn't possible and if it's not then I think it is down to them to replace my ring and I can get it blessed at the church. I'm just so angry that all I wanted was my rings to be resized so I could finally wear them again and they have managed to break them both. Even if they do replace them it will never be good enough because although my rings didn't cost a lot of money (we got engaged whilst both at uni and married not long after) they both hold such sentimental value and I wanted to be able to pass them on to my children

Was this an independent jewellers or a chain?

Wheresallthesleepgone · 30/05/2021 21:56

@ImbarbaraB it was a well known chain. I stupidly took it there because I thought I could trust a well know brand more than a small independent one (we live in a small town so not many options)

Get cash from them and go to an independent master jeweller. I wouldn’t trust them again.

I would be really concern about the gold leaving green finger. Take the ring elsewhere and have it checked
