Would it be immoral to secretly sterilise a person?

Globaluser · 29/05/2021 20:39

A person you feel doesn’t deserve to have kids? A person who’s children are already in care? Would you, if you could?

So, in a nutshell:
Does anyone feel they could take away the right to have a baby from anyone who could potentially be a danger to a child?

Yabu - yes
Yanbu - no

FYI I’m asking because a friend thinks its wrong to make such a big decision on behalf of a person.

I did midwifery training in the late 1960s.At that time all c-sections were done under GA.I can remember doctors debating wether or not to secretly sterilise women who kept having to have repeated c-sections to give birth.I mean doing it during the next birth.
I cannot remember if it was actually done but then things were certainly covered up.

My parents knew a couple who had a daughter with Downs. This was about 30 years ago. She lived in a mixed sex home and one of the other residents raped her and several other women. She got pregnant and she not only was given an abortion, but also sterilised without her consent. It was basically discussed as being “in her best interests”.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/05/2021 21:40

Well, there are a lot of ill-informed people on here. It may not be secret but the UK courts can, and do, order sterilsations. As Lemonroses said all sides are represented but men have also been the subject of such orders.

toocold54 · 29/05/2021 21:40

I don't think it's morally acceptable, no. What if a person sorted their life out later and wanted kids after an unstable time?

I think it should be a procedure that’s reversible.
Maybe they should just be forced to have the implant if they’ve had 2 or more children put in care. Then if they can prove they’ve sorted their life out for over a year then they can have it removed.

Cowbells · 29/05/2021 21:44

It's immoral.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/05/2021 21:44

There are a very small number of cases of developmental disabilities where it is unclear if the individual is truly capable of consenting to sexual activity as we currently understand consent, possesses enough ability to socialize in mixed sex environments and has a sex drive, and would face real distress at a resulting pregnancy. I really feel for the guardians of these individuals because there is no clear answer here.

I'm not sure thats this situation though? I've got a feeling that where people (eg those with severe disabilities) are not competent to make such decisions, isnt there someone else usually given power of attorney for medical decisions, eg court appointed, a family member or something?

gavisconismyfriend · 29/05/2021 21:49

Smacks of eugenics. Not okay

Blankspace101 · 29/05/2021 21:50

What the actual fuck?

colouringcrayons · 29/05/2021 21:52

Really concerning suggestion, extremely immoral

Hadalifeonce · 29/05/2021 21:53

My niece has adopted 2 children, both with special needs, the are full siblings. I am not sure of the parents' situation, but they keep having children who get taken into care, and each child seems to have worse problems than the previous. I believe they should be steralised.

grapewine · 29/05/2021 21:55

It wasn't a good idea when the Nazis did it, OP. It will never be a good idea. It's abhorrent and immoral, and that's the reply that won't get me banned.

I’m wondering if the voting results are because people are voting YABU to the thread title rather than ^

Cherrysoup · 29/05/2021 21:57

So say sterilise someone who is a raging alcoholic, as an example? I know a woman who repeatedly gets pregnant and each child has been born with foetal alcohol syndrome. All have been removed from her at birth. Should she be sterilised? IMO, yes, but what if in the future she kicks her addiction and becomes an amazing mum?

Who decides? Where would it stop? Should parents with dc with physical or mental issues not be allowed further children? Smacks of the already mentioned Nazi practices. Should people who’ve had multiple terminations be sterilised? (I know someone who had 5, her DP didn’t believe in contraception 😡)

An ethically outrageous idea to some, possibly others may consider it morally sound.

Jesus christ, learn some history!

Worrywart1983 · 29/05/2021 21:59

I can’t believe 40% of people think this is ok!

Youarenothere · 29/05/2021 22:01

Well China is happy to use this as a system of population control of the Uighurs. So forced sterilisation is happening today. But no it’s totally not OK.

I don't think people with such severe disabilities are out there pumping out kids though. This situation sounds like a particular lady is making bad decisions, be it drugs/booze/poor impulse control due to MH etc. All can be temporary... so it is unethical to sterilise her (especially in secret).
Ylvamoon · 29/05/2021 22:04

Life is full of ups and downs. So no, it would be wrong on so many levels.

Globaluser · 29/05/2021 22:04

Oh my god! I can’t believe you people are actually comparing nazis sterilising for supremacy to a convicted child abuser/neglecter being forced to stop from having children.
That’s actually fucked up. But thank you to all that have given answers based on experience.

You did not mention anything about a child abuser/neglecter in your opening post... so you can't really bitch for people defending this person. And even so, they still have bodily autonomy.
AgathaAllAlong · 29/05/2021 22:09

It's not fucked up to compare what you're suggesting to what the Nazis did, they literally steralized people deemed unfit. It is exactly the same. The only difference is what counts as an unfit person.

BillywigSting · 29/05/2021 22:12

There is a name for this and a reason why it is roundly frowned upon by civilised society.

Globaluser · 29/05/2021 22:14

Well, people don’t have children taken off them for not being abusive and neglectful, do they? 🧐

Urgh, I think it’s crazy how anyone can think that a child’s life/happiness is less important than a persons right to have more children.
Thats pretty damn heartbreaking is that!

@globaluser

People don't care what's right or wrong, only what their emotions tell them is "right".
