Since ive hit (surgical) menopause, i cant cope with certain sounds. I have a feeling I've developed misophonia. One sound that is a particular bane is scraping of knives and forks on plates. It makes me irrationally angry. My kids think im crazy. I just want to, whilst we are at home, to use the plastic plates we have for picnics etc.

So, im beieng unreasonable _ dont use plastic plates

Yanbu _ use plastic its fine, it doesnt matter

Do you mean reusable plastic plates or disposable ones? If disposable then I think it’s too environmentally destructive, but if you mean plastic plates that you keep, wash and reuse then it’s ok.

Misophonia can be a really terrible thing so I don’t blame you for struggling and I would hope your family could be sympathetic. You could look into something like CBT to help you cope as a longer term strategy as well.

Charlieiscool · 29/05/2021 09:25

Reusable plastic or else disposable paper plates if that’s what you need to do is fine. Disposable plastic every day is not a responsible choice.

Branleuse · 29/05/2021 09:30

Are you on HRT?

Arbadacarba · 29/05/2021 09:31

Yes, but get reusable picnic/camping plates. You can get some that are in the style of traditional plates; i.e. white and patterned.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 29/05/2021 09:33

We went through a period of this for 3 years, dd has very severe Misophonia and we had to use plastic plates and cutlery

Sadly as she got worse we stopped eating together and then ds developed Misophonia too so that was the end of family meals in our home

RampantIvy · 29/05/2021 09:35

Re-usable is fine. What about laminate?

Cornettoninja · 29/05/2021 09:36

I don’t see an issue, you can get some really nice reusable ones sold at this time of year for BBQs/picnics. My only reservation would be as a result of laziness because I don’t think they do as well in the dishwasher, traditional plates can take a bit more of a battering in there.

DeathByWalkies · 29/05/2021 09:45

So long as they're reusable, YANBU (but maybe keep some china for when you have guests)

You should probably speak to your GP though

HattieBlue · 29/05/2021 09:49

You can get bamboo plates. They can't go in microwave but clean easily. Reusable and better for the environment than plastic plates especially as will need to replace more often than China ones. But to answer your question YANBU your house your choice

RaspberryCoulis · 29/05/2021 09:51

If you mean sturdy, melamine or proper plastic plates which you can use again and again well that's fine.

If you're talking thin plastic or polystyrene use once and throw away plates then obviously that's not fine.

Branleuse · 29/05/2021 09:53

The reason i asked about HRT is that misophonia could be an anxiety issue and your tolerance to things is going to be massively affected by the sudden drop in your oestrogen levels by your surgical menopause.
HRT could be a gamechanger for you if youre not already on it. Hormones affect everything

Surlyburd · 29/05/2021 10:01

Im on tibolone, which is great for the hot sweats and anxiety. I think its because i had to have a hysterectomy and oophrectomy without a choice. It was just at beginning of first lockdown, so had a bout of depression. My dh has cyclothemia and heis understanding.

Yes, reusable plastic plates too. Wouldnt dispose of large amounts of plastic every day x

Ha I came here thinking you were going to use disposable plates for every meal (which would not be OK). If it's causing you distress I don't see why you shouldn't use reusable plastic plates OP.If it makes your life easier and doesn't harm anyone else why not?

newnortherner111 · 29/05/2021 10:29

Seems reasonable given that they are reusable. Though you cannot expect if and when you eat out for this to happen, so have you considered earplugs or headphones as an alternative?

DifferentHair · 29/05/2021 10:35

Reusable is fine. Who cares that they are plastic

MargaretThursday · 29/05/2021 10:38

Why don't the kids want to?

I'm asking because one of mine has a thing about the feel of a lot of (non-disposable) plastic plates. Makes her shudder. So if one of them has a real problem with it, then you'll need to think of something else.

Surlyburd · 29/05/2021 10:50

Thanks everyone, i dont feel so bad now. Im going to look into getting some nice bamboo ones i think. We have picnic plastic ones at the mo.

The kids dont mind i dont think. They are complaining because they think im weird Confused
