I like both these guys. Today I followed the links for their inspiring recipes for FSM families. As a confident cook (and with money to spend on food) I was appalled at the recipes. So disappointed.
Yes - the recipes are too complicated
No - the recipes are accessible for most people

Where are the recipes?

countdowntonap · 28/05/2021 22:22

Totally with you. If they were serious about this, why weren’t teachers sent direct links? Why does the information require a follow on SM? Baked beans and some rice are a regular meal for the kids I teach.

Troupador · 28/05/2021 22:25

I just watched two, kettle omlette and a chicken pie one. Seemed easy to follow along with and used frozen, canned things for the pie and omelette showed a way of cooking if you only have access to a kettle, I don't think they're too bad, but I haven't watched them all.

Vooga · 28/05/2021 22:28

I haven't seen those recipes but Ive always thought tom kerridges recipes were ridiculously over complicated.

WonkyCactus · 28/05/2021 22:29

A) It's Marcus Rashford and B) the recipes are aimed at less confident cooks who are on a budget. All the ones I've seen seem like they would be very easy and tasty.

Why are we assuming people on free school meals cant follow a recepie? They are struggling financially not thick. Stuck in a rut or lacking in confidence because of limited ingredients. Maybe a lack of cooking equipment. They all look like one pan dish type things from what I can see.

ViciousJackdaw · 28/05/2021 22:51

Marcus Radford? I never knew they had one called Marcus, mind you I'm sure he'd know all about feeding the family!

UhtredRagnarson · 28/05/2021 23:00

Now I’ll bet the radfords could do a meal on a budget cook book!! Grin

Please ask MNHQ to correct your title OP.

everybodysang · 29/05/2021 09:33

I can't see the issue with the recipes? They're pretty straightforward and look like they're designed to make with not much equipment. DD's best friend was in a shelter for most of the year before last - her parents are both good cooks and perfectly capable of following a recipe, but only had access to a kettle and microwave (and occasionally a cooker but not always). These look like they'd have been handy.

megletthesecond · 29/05/2021 09:37

I can't see the recipes. It looks like they're only on Instagram?

I think you are being pretty patronising actually. Are you suggesting people on FSM cannot be confident in the kitchen or cannot read recipes.

I have not come across them before but I have just read the chicken satay one you provided a link for and it looks extremely straight forward.

Oblomov21 · 29/05/2021 09:51

I really like Tom K. But I find all his recipes far too complicated. And bless him, he is cloud cuckoo land, re his views - he has no idea what basic cooks most of the uk population is. They can't cope with his level of complexity. Easy for me and most MN'ers who are only basically competent, but not for the kind of audience he is appealing to.

JingsMahBucket · 29/05/2021 09:51

@Ihatesandwiches it would be helpful if you linked to the Marcus Rashford recipes you’re talking about so we have actual context.

Namechangedlady · 29/05/2021 10:03

Looking at that link you posted, the chicken Satay looks incredibly easy to follow. I think even people who are on FSM might be able to just about work it out Hmm

Tullyjune · 29/05/2021 10:07

They seem fairly straightforward recipes to me? Might try a few actually!

CharlesDickensHairyBalls · 29/05/2021 10:08

I don't get why you're appalled - do you think they are too complicated? Do you think the ingredients are too expensive?

I think the recipes are good. I think they are probably more pitched to kids - I'm sure I saw Marcus in an interview saying that he'd like young people to be able to feel like they could whip something up in the kitchen by the end of the project. So it's about confidence building in the kitchen and, as others have said, using everyday ingredients and equipment.

My kids have tried a couple. No, not gourmet but pretty easy and tasty.

As an initiative I think it's great - just having a successful young multi-millionaire footballer talk openly about poverty and food poverty and embrace "domestic" issues like cooking without embarrassment is huge - and I doubt that it would have been put together without significant input about what types of food lower income/FSM families have access to.

MrsPnut · 29/05/2021 10:15

The recipes are pretty simple and also because there are videos and Tom shows what things should look like at each step, it makes people who are not confident cooks more likely to have a go.
Marcus being involved just increases the appeal of having a go.
Last week's recipe was an omelette cooked in a kettle, ideal if you have very limited cooking facilities.

That Whole Chicken Satay recipe is not straightforward! Not to mention that it would cost a fortune to buy all the ingredients.

I fancy trying the Beef and Stout Stew, just without the Stout and Mushrooms.

User629202 · 29/05/2021 11:04

I don’t see what’s difficult about the chicken satay recipe. It’s literally nothing more complicated than chopping and stirring. Most people could follow it, I think.

You don’t have to follow them on social media to access the recipes. It’s an open account, the videos can be viewed by anyone whether you’ve followed or not.

User629202 · 29/05/2021 11:07

Also, some people on this thread seem to be suggesting that ‘FSM’ means ‘too stupid to follow basic instructions’. People whose children get FSM are on low incomes - it is no reflection of their intelligence or competence Hmm so this rubbish about how the ‘average MNer’ could follow the recipe but a family benefitting from FSM couldn’t is judgmental and patronising.

This is the chicken satay recipe. Looks pretty straightforward to me, and not that expensive.

That's a completely different recipe - not one part of the campaign (he is a professional chef, after all) with Rashford.

The chicken satay recipe posters are referring to is pretty much slice up chicken, cook with some spices and veg, add peanut butter and noodles - works out at around 40p per head even if you have to buy a whole jar of peanut butter to get whatever quantity is needed for the recipe.
