To think nightshifts encourage close bonding of colleagues?

I work dayshifts and nightshifts. I have found on nightshifts there is this close bonding between colleagues that takes place that is absent on dayshifts. Everyone seems more open and talkative on nightshifts and we end up having really close, personal conversations and laughing a lot.
I wonder if this is a known thing?

I think tiredness definitely contributes as I do find that we all become giggly and laugh over the smallest little things. I also think social conventions differ on nightshifts. It is quite common that we will order a group food delivery on our lunch break which we don't ever do on a dayshift, I think sitting in the break room at 2am eating pizza (socially distanced of course) definitely together fosters friendship(!) Also there tends to be more downtime on a nightshift compared to a dayshift.

Do any other nightshifters experience this?

That's been my experience too.
I think part of it was down to there being less work (at least there was where I worked) to do on a nightshift so more time to chat and bond with colleagues.

Absolutely. I’ve been nursing for 13 years, I definitely had a special bond with people I worked nights with. We had more time to chat (used to chat while catching up with paperwork!).

Yep definitely! I always find the same.
There's also things you say on night shifts which never get said on days, like "have a good sleep!" when you leave Grin

Yes, I love nightshifts for this reason. I find at night there's less "work" but the stuff that does happen is more serious. The sense of camaraderie at 4am when your team has dealt with something serious and the rest of the world is asleep is grear.

Definitely! I’m a nurse and remember those (rare) times we sat with tea, played card games and ate food, sometimes got a takeaway. It was great. Oh and don’t forget the ghost stories!
