Any breastfeeding mums had the vaccine?

I'm sorry; I'm shamelessly posting here for traffic. Could anyone who has had the vaccine whilst breastfeeding share their experience? I'm currently feeding my 5 month old and am considering booking my 1st vaccine. While The Breastfeeding Network have stated there is no known mechanism through which the vaccine ingredients can pass into breastmilk, they have said that there are some limited anecdotal reports that some women have noticed symptoms of mastitis or altered milk supply following the vaccine. I'd love to hear the experiences of other mums here, if possible. Trying to make my mind up!

Thank you!

I had Pfizer when my DD was two weeks old. Just a sore arm.

MaryShelley1818 · 27/05/2021 14:38

I've had both doses of Pfizer, first when DD was just 2wks old. No adverse side effects for either of us.

I had Pfizer on monday morning, was pretty tired in the afternoon and head felt very heavy! Fine on Tuesday although arm ached a bit. DS is 14 months, he had a slight temp on Tuesday but that may be down to teething! He was fine yesterday and today.

I've had both doses of Astra Zeneca (February and April) and have noticed no difference in feeding my 3 year old. I always trust the Breastfeeding Network.

Yes, the Breastfeeding Network are very good. It was their web page that said some mothers had mentioned to their supporters a few instances of altered supply etc. That's what prompted this thread. The replies are very interesting and helpful.

I NEED SOME REASSURANCE!!

I had my second Covid vaccine last night. I EBF. My baby has just turned 7 months and has religiously slept 7pm-4ish for months. As you can imagine by 4am I am absolutely brimming with milk, and already have a let down before picking baby up. This morning when he woke my boobs were just soft and not remotely full (after 9 hours!) I know this hasn’t regulated as this hasn’t been in the case in 5 months and is not our normal. Has the jab effected my supply? Will it be temporary? I keep feeding him just don’t feel like there’s any improvement!! Please help!!

No effect in n my supply, though when my period is due my supply does reduce for a few days.
Try not to panic, at 7 months I assume you are starting to wean and baby can be offered sips of water.
And obviously keep offering boob so your supply goes back up.

I had mine 4 weeks after giving birth- now baby is 5 months. I was eager to get it so the antibodies would be passed to him. Not as efficiently as if I was still pregnant, but the guidance changed after I gave birth! No problems whatsoever... just a heavy arm for 24 h both times!

BFing a 9-month-old and have had both vaccines now (Pfizer). No changes to my milk supply or mastitis at all - just the commonly reported symptoms of feeling a bit coldy for a couple of days after, which had no impact on BFing.

ATrifleofFun · 26/10/2021 13:21

I've now had 3 doses of the Pfizer and haven't had any problems feeding my 16 month old. I did skip a period after dose 2 in March but I've been normal since.

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 26/10/2021 13:24

Had mine back in April time and bf a 2 year old, didn't notice any difference and nor did he. And trust me he would have told me if anything was amiss 😅

Sparklybanana · 26/10/2021 13:58

You can have a whole forum filled with people saying there were no changes but be swayed by one who says there was. This is the trouble with anecdotes is that all it takes is one coincidence and the blame is at the door of the vaccine even though no statistician would take that result as significant. Blocked ducks can happen at any point but even if the jab was to cause them, covid would be much worse in general, and would definitely affect breastfeeding if you got it badly. Consider that milk supply drops at certain points so we'll worth looking to see if you are at one of these milestones before blaming the vaccine for supply drops.
I am breastfeeding, I noticed no supply issues and I also have covid with barely any symptoms thanks to the vaccine. I can be fairly confident of this because my kids also have it and they are suffering worse than I am which wouldn't normally be the case.

Had both doses - March and June - and no problems with supply or side effects. I was BF my son at the time for both.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 26/10/2021 17:38

I think I noticed a slight dip in supply after both doses of mine (Pfizer), similar to the dip around my period or when I am particularly exhausted. My child is 3.5 so I appreciate it's easy for me to be unphased by it, but I'm sure your supply will quickly pick back up @Jemlousx and baby will be getting plenty of antibodies too. At 7 months your supply is very strong and will come right back up with continued demand. Make sure you're well hydrated, maybe even think about oats or fennel tea, but mostly I think it'll just sort itself very quickly. Cake

Thanks so much for a lovely reassuring reply! I think I definitely know this in my head it’s just come as a total surprise today, I didn’t notice anything last time and don’t think I expected anything to effect supply other than him not taking as much at this age.
