Fire in bedroom

Hi, we had a fire in our house, due to candle being left burning while DH went to the loo.

Thankfully we out it out quickly but are there black burn marks on the bed, mattress, carpets etc

I now need to call insurers but I've never claimed before and I'm so nervous. I'm convinced we will be given short shrift as candle was left briefly unattended. Does anyone have any experience with this? Affected items are carpet, mattress, bed stead, bedside table and bedding.

Thanks

@honeygirlz sorry no idea, it was as long time ago. I think it was mainly clothing and IKEA furniture which was damaged. Good luck. Let's face it lots of household claims are accidental damage

They were more interested in my claims history but as I have had this policy for around 10 years and this is my only claim it wasn’t an issue.

I can’t really fault the handling of my claim so far. Ok it is taking time to sort out and I am without a kitchen whilst it is but that is a mix COVID restrictions and the fact my claim will be quite high.
Within 24 hours they had authorised the repair to my boiler and my purchase of a table top cooker to tide me over. Both were reimbursed to me within 3 days of me emailing my receipts. A month on and the delay is due waiting for howdens to come to measure up for the new units but I have a date now so things are moving along.

My husband runs a home insurance department, honestly they have heard it all twenty times a day! You’re not the first and won’t be the last.I hope you have accidental damage otherwise you won’t be able to make a claim.

Please be careful. I rang my insurers a few years ago to enquire if I was covered for dropping my laptop. I didn’t claim but because I’d enquired if was left on my file and I had to declare it every year that I’d looked at making a claim even though I didn’t go through with it.

I wouldn’t worry especially about your insurance premium going up tbh. My claim is a high claim one (>£100k) and I did a check to see what my premium would go up to and it’s still less than £50 per month so not horrendous.

Ex household claims manager here. It's fire. Covered under big standard house building and contents policies. I've dealt with a lot worse things ... Accidents happen which is why you buy insurance.
We only turned things down when people took no care at all like the guy who left his patio doors open overnight after being burgled twice before that way!

Its fire not accidental damage
