Doing a masters with a 2:2 at undergraduate level

Hi just looking for a bit of advice

DS 21 has just completed his third year on his undergraduate course, he has not got his degree classification yet but it looks very likely he will get a 2:2. He has applied for a masters which has a requirement of a 2:2 to be able to go on to the course. DS has been wondering whether a masters is the right thing to be doing with a 2:2 degree, he has said that he always would have thought you needed a 2:1 to get on to a masters but the requirement for his masters that he is applying for is definitely a 2:2. However DS also feels that if they accept him on to the course then surely they must think he is capable of taking on the degree otherwise they wouldn't accept him if they thought he would fail.

Does anyone have any insight and know if there DC's have gone on to do a masters with a 2:2 in their undergraduate degree and how it turned out?

I did my MSc with no undergraduate degree, and got a distinction.
That said, I was a mature student, although I didn't exactly fly through my professional exams.

If universities are still largely online for the next academic year, and you feel your son has suffered from that, why not take a years' break and get some practical experience?

Which master did you do out of curiosity?

Sassy31 · 27/05/2021 19:20

Without a first degree, that should say. I thought you needed a degree to get in a masters course

Did he pull out evry stop and strain every sinew to get the 2:2?

If it was a massive struggle I'd think twice

I am thinking of studying for my Masters and my degree is also a 2.2. I gained my degree quite awhile ago and have taught my subject for 30 years.

MSc in Charity Management - very similar to an MBA, but without the focus on profit.
My accountancy qualification is degree equivalent, but gained through evening study at private colleges.
Biggest shock to the system was having to hand write two hour plus exams in a couple of modules when I'm not used to writing anything longer than a post it note Hmm

Probably not directly comparable to OP's sons situation TBH - I think Universities and business schools are more flexible about prior qualifications when you have a few years relevant experience, rather than going in to the Masters directly from an undergraduate degree.
I was one of the older students on the course, but most had practical experience, I can only recollect one person that didn't - and from memory, she found it quite a struggle.

I dropped out of my undergraduate degree in second year. Never finished. I still got on to a masters course! Got a distinction and went on to do a PhD. I can't imagine a 2:2 will stop him from being accepted unless it's a highly competitive programme.

I was so happy when the handwritten exam for my masters got dropped in favour of 24 hour assessment submitted online. I still remember the hand cramps from undergrad exams and I was used to writing then!!

Hi everyone- thought I'd update you to say ds has confirmation he got a 2:2 degree classification, this means he has a confirmed place on his PGCE he had a conditional offer for. However he still is deciding on the masters, he is thinking of speaking to the uni and getting more information on it. I'd just thought I'd ask, DS does not want to rush any decisions but if he were to decline his PGCE offer when is the latest time he should do this. At the end of this month he has an online pre-course event to attend for the PGCE, I think he feels the clock is ticking on him making a decision but he still hasn't made up his mind yet.
