To have noticed a curly hair renaissance?

lolliwillowes · 25/05/2021 18:58

I'm noticing more and more (usually younger) people with curls this past couple of years. I am slightly curly myself so it stands out to me.

It's kind of great because a lot of these looks are pretty natural, even embracing the frizz. I know we're supposed to loathe frizz but it is often a natural consequence of normal hair types reacting to the environment, etc. I'm seeing more people just going with the flow with that now, so it's kinda refreshing.

When I go to the salon they never try to get the irons out on it now, thank god. It seems there's a growing appreciation of a long neglected hair type slowly blossoming.

I guess a lot of people my age (late gen x) are still so used to GHD's and the likes we might end up wondering wtf!

Anyone else noticed this? I hope more and more wavies and curlies are embracing their hair.

(disclaimer: all hair types are gorgeous, but curls/frizz have been shit talked for too long).

I am with you lolli. My wavy / sometimes curly hair is definitely having a moment . That said, I am old and can no longer be bothered with straightening treatments or even a proper blow dry

grumpyhetty · 25/05/2021 19:04

I have returned to my natural curly- I am old though

StevieNix · 25/05/2021 19:06

I love curly/wavy hair, think it looks so much better than straight. However I have poker straight fine hair naturally that will absolutely not hold a curl no matter what I try! Think straight hair looks a bit dated now - I’m always conscious that it looks like I’ve straightened my hair within an inch of my life but I don’t even own a straightener anymore.

Namechangedlady · 25/05/2021 19:07

The Curly Girl method helped me learn to appreciate my curls. I don't follow it to the letter but have found that properly conditioning my hair and not using towels/heat has improved the frizz a lot! I dont use shampoo at all now and the difference it has made is staggering. I can just wash and go now. I was always envious of people who could do that before!

Oneborneverydecade · 25/05/2021 19:08

I've been curly/wavy for a year after straightening my hair for almost 30 years. It's no easier and I spend a fortune on products. I won't go back though

lolliwillowes · 25/05/2021 19:12

Naturally straight hair is exquisite! The problem is when everyone feels pressured to conform to the same 'type', which a huge percentage of the population don't have.

Ive mostly seen younger girls with the curls and frizz - not styled or structured curls, just kind of left alone and long. Perhaps my generation will get left behind with the GHD's and skinny jeans Grin, but yeh, it's all rather silly isn't it?

I have gone back to my natural ringlets after 20-odd years of straightening and it's been a revelation.

As a PP said, I've not gone quite full CGM (it's a bit cult-y and prescriptive for my tastes), but I no longer use shampoo (just co-wash) and use 'curly girl friendly' products.

It's made a huge difference to the health and condition of my hair and scalp, and people frequently comment on how lovely my 'natural' hair is. Wish I had done it years ago!

Camomila · 25/05/2021 19:14

I've always had mine curly, and I can't say I've noticed more people with curly hair - but definitely more people with their hair left natural as opposed to straightened with straighteners.

I'd like a fringe but a curly fringe has so much potential to go wrong!

All curls are different, it is difficult to say who will get on with gel, mousse, CGM and whatnot. I have very light curls that drop out naturally after a while, but the curly girl method really doesn't work for me at all.

I dry in a long plait and add leave-in conditioner and it's great.
I used to straighten fro decades and it wrecked my hair, it would never grow past my shoulders :(

I always think the whole products and gadget thing is a con though, just another way to part women from their money.

Haha, ignore the French toast - I was trying to upload a picture of a girl with a curly fringe I like Blush

There's a great reddit sub (curly hair and curly hairUK) with quite a few sporting fridges, some look fantastic!

I have poker straight hair and wish hairdressers would stop trying to persuade me to let them put a wave in my hair.

I feel like the beachy waves thing has been around for a good decade now?

Did you mean to post a picture of strawberries? They look lovely though!

I’m loving the curly hair love. My DD is mixed race and so is super curly - being able to buy the right products in places like Boots and Superdrug is great!

what's going on here? is squirty cream the secret to your curls? Grin
Sawyersfishbiscuits · 25/05/2021 20:50

It's brilliant! I'm a curly girl (never could be bothered to straighten) and there's so much advice available and much more curly products again! It's really made things easier.

murbblurb · 25/05/2021 20:54

Each to their own, but even though it is 2 years since I had the professional straightening I still reach for the g h d s. I have reasonably pleasant curls after washing but it goes rough and frizzy once slept on and feels awful. 10 mins with the straighteners and it is comb and go. Can't be doing with ages farting about with 'methods'. So boring.

lceniWarrior · 25/05/2021 20:55

Is Co wash just with conditioner? I have fly away slightly frizzy, wavy hair and some days it looks good natural, but other days a disaster. I have no control over what day it may be.

namesnamesnamesnames · 25/05/2021 20:57

Yes, since about 20 years ago when the curly girl book came out that started the curly girl method, it's slowly got more popular. Good, hey!

PickAChew · 25/05/2021 21:08

I don't co-wash as my scalp really doesn't like it but I do use gentle sulphate free cleansers.

StoneofDestiny · 25/05/2021 21:09

Poker straight hair must be so simple to manage.

StevieNix · 25/05/2021 21:13

@StoneofDestiny in my experience it is, I can just brush it when wet and leave it to dry naturally (or a just a quick go with the hair drier) and it looks ok, which is especially handy after things like swimming etc. It also very rarely gets knotty and never frizzy, but it can be hard to get volume into it or style it in a different way (my hair will not hold a curl no matter what I try)
Although it is low maintenance I would absolutely trade it in for wavey or curly hair in a heart beat!

lolliwillowes · 25/05/2021 21:23

I think it depends, no matter what hair type. It's the sub types in-between....

My sister has pin straight glossy hair but spends ages faffing with it trying to create volume and complains about greasiness.
Some friends with straight hair seem pretty carefree and happy.

For me, as a wavy/kinky type I just found a way to leave it alone with no fuss, no products. I think it's just luck!

if your natural hair type is too much faff then of course you're going to gravitate to something else.

I think it's odd how people get snippy about hair types though. We should all do what we prefer. It is nice to see curls and waves being around more now simply because they have been left out for a long time.
There are people who have been told curly hair is untidy/unnaceptable in the workplace fgs, this is pretty screwed up.

A satin or silk pillowcase is a god send with wavy/curly hair IME - really reduces tangling and frizz overnight.

I have very fine wavy hair, a mix of 2a, 2b and 2c. I like having such versatile hair, I can encourage it mostly straight without heat but can also style it in loose waves or tighter waves.

I use a mix of co washing (As I Am dry and itchy co-wash) and a low poo shampoo like noughty ones. Too much co-washing weighs my hair down (I do clarify and chelate monthly) and I have arthritis in my fingers and sometimes can't be arsed with all that scalp scrubbing required.

Some of the ladies I follow on Insta have the most envy inspiring curls. It definitely seems to be increasingly popular to embrace textured hair.

RattlesnakesUnfold · 25/05/2021 21:32

Think it’s the rise of the Curly Girl method. People with wavy and curly hair (like me) got fed up of trying to GHD it after every wash and ending up with heat damaged dry hair, so opted for shampoo and conditioner that are sulphate free, silicone free etc. And discovered things that make curls come back like flaxseed products, rice water, products that define and hold curls while keeping them healthy and adding shine. Curly cuts are a thing too.

And more mums with curly haired children are encouraging them to embrace their curls, buying CG friendly kids products. And not trying to brush the curls into a frizz then plait it or put it in bunches like the 80s/90s.

I think lockdown and having a baby has actually done wonders for my hair (although do still have some post partum hair loss). I always left a day in between washes but in lockdown I was able to leave two without worrying too much, and so now I do that all the time. Plus having a baby meant I had no time/inclination to be drying/straightening my hair so I just wash and leave it now, I don’t even brush or comb it in the shower/after a shower and it rarely gets knotty. I tie it up in a messy bun on day 3. It’s grown quite a bit. Will occasionally straighten/curl it with a wand when going out out (which to be fair again due to lockdowns and baby has been twice this year so far) but most days I do nothing to it! I’m liking it more and more each day!
I have noticed a few more people embracing being curly too! I hated my curls as a kid, I’ve spent from being pre teen-late 20s getting blow drys/straightening it/curling it with heat.
