Is US Mother's Day different to the UK's?

I know that the UK and US celebrate of different dates, but I was wondering if there is a difference in significance / level of celebration too?

Only asking because I'm on a 30-day alcohol free app, and a number of the US participants mentioned they would struggle to abstain on Day 1 as it was Mother's Day and therefore usually Mimosa's for breakfast etc.

Anyone shed any light ?

In the UK, Mother's Day comes from 'Mothering Sunday' which has more religious significance because it was associated with the church. Mother's Day in America is more of a commercial holiday (sort of like Valentine's Day or Father's Day in the UK). I think they are generally celebrated in similar ways though. I grew up in the US and we definitely didn't have mimosas for breakfast! But I would say definitely in the UK I would open a bottle of prosecco around 11am. Alcohol isn't part of US celebrations in quite the same way as it is in the UK. There is certainly a particular segment of the population (my very middle class urban American friends who might celebrate with brunch and mimosas). Most people have lunch and presents and go visit grandparents though, probably a lot like here. Unless you're the sort who celebrates everything with mimosas.

not different at all ime
No big tradition of drinking booze for M-Day either side of pond

I'd say the British version is a bit less commercialised. Only just.

Thanks @mindutopia - sounds very much like the UK.

I think maybe the comments were more to do with the alcohol app community then!!
