pets control bait box - mouse - and pregnancy

Hello,

We saw a mouse in our kitchen floor the other day and we called in the pets control. The good news is that the mouse is not nesting in the flat but, most likely, was passing by as there were only small amount of droppings behind the kitchen unit. It might come back again though.

So, they placed a bait box under the kitchen unit and a couple of others in the other rooms. They did not use spray or anything like that, only the bait boxes (which, of course, contain chemicals)

I am 25 weeks pregnant and was asking about the safety of the bait boxes. They reassured me that the boxes are safe for everyone, including pregnant women. They actually said that you should swallow the content of the boxes to harm you.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge about this? I know that the experts reassured us that these boxes are safe but am still uneasy.

Many thanks!

So you are discounting the experts and asking non-experts on a forum? They use them in hospitals and school kitchens.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 24/05/2021 15:24

Um, it’s fine. You can’t get mouse-poisoned via osmosis.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/05/2021 15:25

Yes, it’s very safe, he’s right that you’d have to swallow it to be harmed.

Chanjer · 24/05/2021 15:31

Don't eat anything out of the boxes or any dead mice and you will be fine

EiriniG · 24/05/2021 15:34

Thanks everyone for your replies. It is good to know that these types are considered safe.

@TwoAndAnOnion I am not discounting the experts at all. I am just asking for similar experiences in here. Pregnancy is a stressful period for some, so a friendly conversation on a topic of concern always help. But, anyway, thanks for the taking the time to reply.

Private companies use bait boxes and they're pretty useless because the mice just don't go in them.

The council come round for pretty cheap and just put poison everywhere and it sorts the problem fast. They tell you to keep kids and dogs away from the poison. But honestly it's not going to harm you.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/05/2021 15:36

No, absolutely do not do that.

WiddlinDiddlin · 24/05/2021 15:37

Council pest control also use bait boxes, ive no idea where you got the idea they don't miltonj...

Bait boxes are appropriate in some situations and not others - if placed where mice are looking for food, or in run-ways they will once they get over the novelty, investigate and go inside and eat.

OP, unless you are planning on eating the bait or the dead mice that result, the poison used will have no effect on you whatsoever, so my advice would be to stay away from the bait boxes and where they are placed, because constantly looking and fiddling WILL put mice off going in them...and don't eat any of it!

Mice and rats love to eat in sheltered places, so we use poison in boxes and in drain pipes to good effect.

Modern poisons tend to kill slowly or the rodents stop eating them.

The most important thing you can do is to keep the place clean and free from dropped food that attract mice in, though sometimes they come in regardless.

Other than that, whilst your concerns are understandable, you and your baby will be perfectly fine.

Good luck with the pregnancy.

If they are coming in from outside you heed to block any gaps in pointing or vents with wire wool or fine metal mesh. Bait is fine, presumably you are not handling it anyway.

Thank you

Unless this is somehow a reverse and you are in fact the mouse, you’ll be fine, just try to resist eating the bait... 👍🏻

Yep

But if you do, just go into the garden and eat some grass. You'll be able to deposit the remains in your DH's slipper within ten minutes.

I've got that from when the council came round to my house to kill mice. They literally said bait boxes are not effective and don't bother with private companies. Obviously not all councils will be the same. All mice were dead within a week from them scattering poison behind kick boards and using gel poison behind radiators and fridge. I've also used the bait boxes from Wilkos and mice just don't go in there. They are suspicious of new things and avoid them.
