UTI misery!

Mum233 · 24/05/2021 14:22

Just over a week ago I had sudden onset of UTI symptoms (urgency to wee, pain at end of wee etc). Rang GP and given antibiotics which made it ok although still not 100% ok (still discomfort at end of going for a wee). Wee sample was sent to lab and negative for everything apart from red and white blood cells. GP not at all concerned but I’m confused!
Was it a UTI or not? GP brushed me off in my phone appointment

White blood cells are an indication of a UTI - your GP will not be bothered about this but you do need a longer course of antibiotics to prevent it from becoming embedded. This has happened to so many women including myself

Please google Malone-Lee and read about chronic UTIs. Doctors are so woefully misinformed and this needs to be dealt with asap.

If it was positive for red blood cells then there was blood in your urine. If this happens again it should be investigated further.
If you are still experiencing symptoms please contact your gp. Have you seen any blood in your urine?

op, is there any chance you could be peri menopausal. a lack of oestrogen causes mayhem for women's bladders. Its not always obvious its due to hormones depleting.

Thank you.
GP that I originally had contact with prescribed me antibiotics. I still have the soreness at the end of a wee but nothing else. GP refusing to give more antibiotics because it showed no infection!

I suffered with UTI for years. As frequently as every 2 months. The ongoing pain and or bleeding can be from the injury caused to your bladder from the infection. If you are testing negative for infection it is likely that this is the case and you just need to wait for the area to recover and heal. Some infections cause the lining of the bladder and urinary tract to become inflamed and raw.
Interestingly, I saw a locum doctor for another infection after a particularly nasty one turned into a kidney infection and subsequently sepsis. She prescribed Trimethoprim to be taken after sex... never had another infection since. 5 years later!

I finished a second course of antibiotics a week ago for a UTI. My most recent urine test shows a tiny trace of the infection but the GP told me I should be able to fight it myself now...

I was also retested for blood in urine and this time it was clear.

You have my sympathies, they are horrible and I’m not a regular sufferer.

I've never had one but DD2 had one in combination with appendicitis - took two lots of antibiotics to clear as she got very much worse a few days after finishing the first course. Trimethoprim did it for her, but the side effects were horrendous.

I made that mistake before, don't do it! I convinced myself I had bladder cancer. I even had visible blood and thankfully it was just a UTI. Easier said than done not to worry but chances are it is nothing serious (I'm the same age as you and it's unlikely for something like that!). I can't remember exactly but I think I have had symptoms linger even after the infection was gone. Hopefully you find that you're free of symptoms soon!
