Thanks, I have but it is DEAD!

Is this a recent thing? I’m a secondary teacher and I’m afraid I haven’t heard of this at all!

Fashio · 25/05/2021 07:25

I had kerboodle. I’d not bother again

Fashio · 25/05/2021 07:26

Why do you need to buy into digital learning

Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 07:26

@Babymeanswashing they’re digital platforms for learning support, revision etc
You don’t use anything digital??

Thanks, I have but it is DEAD!

Well fortunately for you i bumped your dead thread by default... enjoy the replies!

Babymeanswashing · 25/05/2021 07:31

I’m on maternity leave. That’s why I asked if it was recent. Smile

ChloeDecker · 25/05/2021 07:36

Not a big fan of digital platforms as I have found in the past (have used , MyMaths, Hegarty, Doddle etc. among other things over the years) that pupils don’t remember as much of what they do online (especially multiple choice platforms) than they do if they have handwritten it themselves repeatedly.
I also don’t like not being able to see their working out or thought processes to help with my feedback to them.
They mostly seem to exist so that teachers either don’t have to mark directly or can copy and paste the same feedback saving them time (which is fine if that is what you want them for)

Babymeanswashing · 25/05/2021 07:37

Oh, I vaguely remember doddle. I’m not a massive fan: they mostly seem to be created by someone who claims it’s the best thing ever if your school will just spend a lot of money on it. Then we all get training. Then it all gets forgotten about!

TheZeppo · 25/05/2021 07:39

EdLounge.

But I think they’re not worth the money most of the time. Rather spend it on books 😂

Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 07:50

This is really interesting, thanks! So none of these were useful
During lockdown, homeschooling either?

OP posts:
Babymeanswashing · 25/05/2021 07:51

We didn’t use them during the first lockdown - not sure about the second.

Heyha · 25/05/2021 07:53

I was using kerboodle about five years ago. I didn't find it useful other than it was a place to find documents but maybe it's improved since then.

They always look so clunky and dated even brand new, I'd love to meet the people that design them!

Phineyj · 25/05/2021 07:58

We used Teams and Firefly during lockdown. Both have their points, but I agree with others - spend it on good textbooks!

Phineyj · 25/05/2021 07:59

And don't touch Dynamic Learning (Hodder) with a bargepole. The interface, aaargh, my eyes!

winewolfhowls · 25/05/2021 08:03

Gcsepod is good for setting homeworks

Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 08:31

Wow, so to hear the reps from the publishers tell it, most Secondaries use these tools!
I thought the revision options for GSCE and A levels looked good and Kerboodle now has support for TAG

Anyone think that the platforms are great/useful? As a parent our DCs maths revision - primary- is on MyMaths and I find it useful as I help D.C. with theory home work.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 25/05/2021 09:04

As a parent with a maths PGCE I have to say My maths is awful. As a parent you dont get to see the children's working so you are throwing away all those method marks. Most maths platforms are diabolical, especially when the teachers haven't done the work they are setting so inadvertently set 4 hours instead of one hours work. There is one multiple choice one where you can literally sit and guess numbers until the get the right one and you will still be marked as 100%. Hegerty is the best if a bad bunch, but only because the video explanations are so good and it's your best access to quality maths teaching.

Otherwise decent textbooks are the way to go, a way for teachers to set sections of work with links to ancillary you tube videos and a way for children to scan upload there work for it to be properly marked. I can say this whither some experience and not only are we now homeschooling with access to a remote education provider but I also do the Open university myself

Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 09:51

We're looking at Kerboodle because we use the Oxford textbooks and guides and that's their platform.

Volcanoexplorer · 25/05/2021 10:03

We use Kerboodle (Geography), but we don’t use many of the features to be honest. But, we have it so that the kids can have access to the online textbook. It’s great for homework and to help with revision. It was very helpful during lockdown that they all had access to the textbook. I like that you get a teacher answer book too. Plus we can screen shot maps/graphs etc from the textbook and put them into our PowerPoints. This really helps when looking at data on a graph etc. because we can put them up on the board while the kids look at the book and we can then annotate the graphs etc to help them understand them better. We also use the glossary lists for key term tests.

ByTheNine · 25/05/2021 10:06

Kerboodle is really clunky. We've used Educake for multiple choice quizzes and it's really easy to set up - students get on well with it too. Seneca is good for KS5.

Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 10:28

Then why would schools pay for subs when there is free stuff so readily available? I always thought that perhaps having everything in one place was worth it?

OP posts:
Booksaremylife · 25/05/2021 10:29

@Volcanoexplorer

So you pay a sub per subject or subjects then? It's not all or nothing??
