Cat owners - get a cat, let it out, complain that it's not in

I live in a fairly urban area with high density housing. Our local FB groups are inundated with posts about missing cats. I don't understand. People get a cat, let it out and then complain that it doesn't come back. What do they expect to happen?

I am biased. I think owning cats in urban areas and letting them out to shit everywhere, kill birds and caterwaul at 2am is antisocial, but AIBU?

It is commonplace to let your cat out in this country, less so in other countries and I've always found that quite intriguing.

Grew up in central Europe and everyone's cats roamed. BUT! We didn't have shit everywhere issues because there is lots more space including outside of gardens. It was quite rare to have cat shit in a veg patch. Actually I don't remember ever encountering it. Unlike here...
Cats preferred quiet place to do their business and they had lots of them outside of our edibles.

Maybe it says something about where you live OP, as it seems a generalisation. Or about the car drivers, though given the almost universal low standards and the decrease in police to enforce them, that may be a contributory factor.
