Can I report this driver?

Tonight after work I was standing at the bus stop. It was pouring down with rain. There was a deep and long puddle at the very side of the road. Drivers were avoiding it naturally because it was at the side of the road. A white van came speeding up, went in the puddle and it absolutely drenched me through. I had water dripping off my face. I felt so bloody down about the incident. I didn't get his reg number but there might be CCTV in the area. Can I track down the driver and report it?

No

FourEyesGood · 21/05/2021 19:59

The driver was a dick, but I don’t think it’s a reportable offence.

Slub · 21/05/2021 19:59

Oh that sucks what a prize bell end but not much you can do I'm afraid but try and avoid standing near puddles in the road cos some bastards do this on purpose Angry

Justcallmebebes · 21/05/2021 19:59

Actually you can if you can prove it, i.e if local cctv caught it and you have reg no. There have been prosecutions for the exact same thing but obviously proof is key

Still1nLove · 21/05/2021 20:03

I saw a bus do this to a pedestrian. All other vehicles avoided the puddle, the bus swerved to deliberately drive into it. I felt so sorry for the person walking, but nothing I could do as I was driving

BingBongToTheMoon · 21/05/2021 20:07

Yes. They can be fined up to £5000.
Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to splash someone and as it amounts to driving “without reasonable consideration for other persons.”

This!

I drove past someone clearly walking to work at the nearby pharmacist. Some arsehole had clearly just done exactly that to them. So arriving to start work soaking wet. Completely shitty behaviour.
I slowed and drove around a puddle today. Lovely pedestrian smiled and gave me a thumbs up to thank me. I think they assumed I would drench them. Shock

This morning I was drenched outside the front door of work by a Golf driver & a large puddle
On the bus home I sat on a wet , warm bus seat that stunk of piss
I’m drinking wine & moving on

Ginger1982 · 21/05/2021 20:21

It's technically careless driving so, yes you could.

In my local Facebook group everyone is always going on about this. It's one thing if someone deliberately steers into a puddle to soak a pedestrian, but I genuinely think that when it's raining as a pedestrian you have to watch out. Even if a driver sees a puddle they may not be able to avoid it because a car is coming the other way.

However in this case it sounds like it was deliberate, might be worth looking for CCTV.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/05/2021 20:26

I’ve definitely heard/read somewhere that this is illegal. Definitely see if there is any CCTV.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 21/05/2021 20:27

I think I have heard of someone being prosecuted for this. They drenched a woman with her child if I remember correctly. People who get a kick out of deliberately driving through a puddle to drench someone are vile human beings.

tweettweettweettweet · 21/05/2021 20:28

Aww. I feel your pain. This happened to me this week when I was walking. I felt so humiliated. I was already having a bad day.

CCC1 · 21/05/2021 20:31

The road outside our cottage pools water. It’s on the route to the village school and the pavement is only single width. There are drivers that deliberately swerve into it to drench small children and pre-schoolers. Fucking twats. Now I see they can be fined I may have a new mission in life.

MIC2689 · 21/05/2021 20:33

Cor some people are such dicks. You see a puddle when driving and a pedestrian and you just slow down (if you can't go round the puddle). I can't imagine intentionally going through one to drench someone. What an awful thing to do. @CCC1 my new mission in life too now.

Please set up multiple cameras to capture this. What absolute fucking twats!!
DoubleTweenQueen · 21/05/2021 20:37

Also what @BingBongToTheMoon said!

Mydogisagentleman · 21/05/2021 20:38

YANBU.
I did however do just that to my DD. To be fair, she had just turned into our road, so about 15 seconds from home

CCC1 · 21/05/2021 20:41

Oh I will. My son is now 17 so I have years of pent up rage. In fairness we suffered less as it’s outside my house so we could always nip back in and change on the way to school or do a swift change on the way back in. But I’ve lost count of the times I ran back in to grab spare jumpers and trousers for other poor kids about to start the school day sodden.

SymphonyofShadows · 21/05/2021 20:44

It’s awful when people do this, especially first thing when people are on their way out and have to be in wet clothes all day. Someone did this to me deliberately once, but didn’t anticipate having to stop at the lights. She didn’t find it so funny when I appeared at her window and asked her why she was such a massive arsehole.

Chloemol · 21/05/2021 20:52

Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to drive ‘without reasonable consideration for other persons’, and this includes any instance of ‘driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed

You can be fined up to £5000

I would report to the police and see if shops have cctv
