Fed up with 'because Covid' excuses

stuckinarutatwork · 21/05/2021 13:47

A bit of a rant. When will we stop using 'because Covid' as an excuse? Here are a few recent examples:

DC's year 6 leavers' (day) trip to a local (outdoor) attraction July has been cancelled 'because of Covid safety'. I'm sure the place is very compliant with social distancing and other measures etc. The current active cases of Covid in our local authority is THREE (in approx 340 sq. miles / population 87,000) and has never been high. The kids are gutted.

No after-school clubs like netball, football, chess, art etc have run in over a year 'because Covid' but they hope to restart in Jan 2022 Confused (other local schools are running clubs).

I cannot see my GP for a face-to-face consultation about my bad skin 'because Covid'. I appreciate it's not exactly urgent and won't kill me, but I have waited patiently for months and am quite upset about my appearance and would like it treated if possible. Video consultations aren't appropriate as the Dr needs to see the texture of my skin and the video quality isn't up to it. Assuming the Dr has been vaccinated (as have I), the current infection level is tiny and we both wear a mask, is it really that risky? We could even go outside Smile

Neither myself nor my DC have seen a dentist in 18 months for a routine check-up 'because Covid'. I'm not so fussed about myself but pre-Covid, the dentist made a big hoo-ha about how important it was that the DC had fluoride paste applied every 6 months or their teeth are at risk. Dentist will currently only see private patients, not us NHS plebs.

My local council gym has reopened and frankly some of their covid rules are somewhat ridiculous. Last week for instance I had my provoked spot on the gym floor.....fair enough, social distancing still in place. But.....we can't use lockers to store valuables. Meaning if you're moving round on the gym floor and you're worried about having purse/phone/keys going missing, you're moving all your stuff round, so moving germs too.

I had my water bottle as I was expecting a water cooler-removed because of covid. Pretty dangerous and/or uncomfortable to do exercise without access to water. There is a vending machine selling bottled water, but this is ridiculous as the same people touching the water cooler are now touching the vending machine-and it adds to single use plastic!!!

You can no longer shower there. You have to go home and shower....so you're going home smelly in gym gear. Very hygienic....especially if you're on public transport (I'd use my bike but waiting on surgery on cataracts so not an option). Also that means you can't go from the gym somewhere else as you have to go home first.

I'm due to see my dentist early June, wonder if they mention the state of my teeth and the importance of brushing, when they've not been open for well over a year.

The ‘state of your teeth’ is down to your oral hygiene routine at home, nothing to do with not having seen a dentist in a year. They only check for and fix problems that are caused by poor oral hygiene. It sounds like you need to be looking after them better.

Why can’t McDonald’s do porridge in the mornings? Covid.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/05/2021 22:35

Yes, there is SO much piss taking and excuse making. A lot of it to dodge incurring costs that would normally be incurred. June 21st will be a big shift I think , without any distancing requirements businesses & service providers will have nothing to hide behind.

NichyNoo · 21/05/2021 22:40

I agree. My year 6 son has had his school residential cancelled due to COViD, his leavers party cancelled and also won’t have a high school induction. Because they can’t mix the year 6 bubbles apparently. But all the kids from different bubbles have been mixing perfectly legally in different small groups outside for the past month in scouts, at football club, at outdoor taekwondo lessons because they have siblings in different year groups at school, play dates in gardens etc.

Principessa2070 · 21/05/2021 22:46

My dental surgery have had the absolute audacity to deregister us as patients as we haven't attended in so long. It's been just over a year as we were due check ups when lockdown 1 started.

How can they deregister us for that when for a good while we couldn't see a dentist at all because of lockdown (and now looks like we won't for a while either unless we go private!!)

thevassal · 21/05/2021 22:47

yes to @Spidey66 and the gym rules!

You are supposed to arrive 'swim ready' if you want to go swimming, i.e in your costume and pre-showered. However if you want to go to the gym and then swim and get your money's worth out of your extortionate membership this means you have to wear your swimming costume to the gym and then exercise in it before you get in the pool without showering (grim!)

You also aren't allowed to go against the direction of the arrows. So if you want to use the gym you swipe in, walk through the whole building and up to the gym. Then you leave our the designated fire doors when you've finished. If you then want to change into swim kit you then walk around the outside of the building, into the downstairs toilets and change there (you are not supposed to do this, as above, but I refuse to wear my swimsuit to the gym!). then you exit the toilets and the building, again walk around the building and re-enter the front entrance for the THIRD time. You then walk into the pool and have to take off your clothes by the completely open windows in front of the car park where all the local youths laugh at you. then you walk around the pool again because the benches where you leave your bag are the opposite end of the pool and YOU CAN'T WALK AGAINST THE ARROWS. then you swim in your designated lane, and again, have to do a lap of the pool when you're finished, again in full view of the outside, because you have to get out a different end. Then you are actually allowed to use the shower, but only very quickly, and this is again fully open space so everyone in the pool and outside can see you. Then and only then are you allowed into the changing rooms, despite them having about 60 cubicles. You get dressed and exit the building for the third time.

All this and there have been a maximum of 6 gym users in the whole place (gym and pool) the last few times I've used it. I wonder why!

You also can't use lockers, or refill your water bottle (but can buy them from the machine). For some reason they've turned off the wifi too, obviously another covid risk. They've also reduced opening times and number of classes they run but strangely not membership fees.
**@Dementedswan hopefully fucking masks wont be compulsory for too much longer Flowers

I'll be cheerfully ditching mine asap.
Lip readers should be in priority group in my opinion. I'm now on extra meds for anxiety and depression. Been isolate for 15 months. Yet I'm expected to take risk of others to drop masks etc. Ridiculous. All our family are in group 6 and above.

I’m glad I’m not the only one this is pissing off!
Starlitexpress · 21/05/2021 22:57

Apparently we're not allowed tea or coffee because Public health England says we can't use a kettle......'cos of covid, not tight penny pinching boss at all, no sir!
And don't get me started on the customer service issues of people working from home, if they don't know the answer, they can't just ask a colleague, got to take all my details, call around and then call me back at their convenience, quite often the next day, this is not the service we are paying for!

nicslackey · 21/05/2021 23:03

47 quid added to dentist bill to pay for mask and cleaning. Who paid for the masks they wore precovid? Robbing c*s

AmyandPhilipfan · 21/05/2021 23:23

When the first lockdown hit our local Dominos pizza place starting offering a reduced menu due to Covid. Over a year later it’s still reduced. And obviously it’s the cheapest things they’ve removed.

Our dentist is finally offering checkups. I took the kids last week. The waiting room is not open but everyone can wait as close to each other as they like in the small front yard area.

My boys’ secondary school is being quite sensible. After school clubs started as normal after Easter and my Year 8 son’s residential is going ahead in July.

Goodtohear · 21/05/2021 23:29

Definitely dd is still having online guides and will not be face to face till at least September. Ds has been back at scouts (bar lock downs) since October.
Secondary school have just started limited after school sports which Ds is loving.
Dc1 however has had 4 face to face lessons at college since September. And apparently his sen care plan of weekly support (written during covid times) can't be kept to because of covid.
My gp has happily seen me face to face through out however my very large multi sight hospital who currently have 12 covid patients in hospital (and been similar for few months) can't see me, are not doing any surgery unless emergency and can't say when they will start (I've been waiting 21 months for major surgery).

You're not in a council gym in a North London borough are you? Sounds just like mine.
Niconacotaco · 21/05/2021 23:57

What is the deal with every second toilet cubicle being closed? I work in a hospital. All of our toilet cubicles and sinks are available to use as normal. If there was evidence or legislation, surely our toilets would be closed off too?
