Or not

Thinking about it, far more 25 year olds still have to live with their parents these days, which perhaps makes them appear less capable and self-sufficient. My generation were all buying houses and getting on with starting families much younger.

average life expectancy is 84ish. Therefore 25 is young in adult terms.

Its not a derogatory term just a fact

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 21/05/2021 07:34

I'm 25 and wouldn't call myself a young adult, that I'd class as anyone aged between 18-21.

KingdomScrolls · 21/05/2021 07:36

Most funding streams for education, supported housing etc class 18-24 as young adults. That's the way I view it

Tigger85 · 21/05/2021 08:08

By age it is still young adult although many people that age have a lot of responsibility and experience, others are much much more immature. I am part of unison and they classed anyone up to 29 as a young worker and sent emails and surveys to that age group to get their point of view on things. Socially I think achieving independent adulthood is taking longer and longer with people seeming to be immature for much longer and it's been that way for a long time. I think there are multiple reasons for that including the inability to afford to leave home until mid-late 20s for many younger adults due to rent and house prices.

@CorianderBee

I'm very lucky to now be in the role I wanted to be in (ish I'm in tabloid when I wanted to be somewhere worthwhile) I have many many friends who went to uni, worked etc but nobody hires them or they end up as carers etc.

We're sold a lie. What worked for our parents doesn't work for us. And as someone who has managed to get into the industry I wanted to I can tell you that the main thing that matters... connections. Rich. Private school kids will get work exp at the Telegraph, at Apple, at Google, at government, at Vogue, even at Aldi head office because they know people. Kids without those connections are either screwed or have to do what I did.

Earn 14k alongside A Level leavers living London despite having more than one degree.

This is why we need a change of government.

To answer the OP, I think 18-21 is young adult of you’re thinking of life skills, but up to 25 young adult in terms of career.

Pbbananabagel · 21/05/2021 08:37

@Fitforforty completely agree, super patronising with an implication that someone of that age is not making mature choices. And also agree with what another PP said about calling people of that age ‘young adult’ is a way to justify their own offsprings immaturity.
