I apologise as this isn’t an Aibu question but I would like a vote. I have a traditional Victorian terrace where the front door opens into the living room, then there’s a dining room followed by separate kitchen. I would like the same flooring through kitchen and dining room and then kitchen floor tiled.

Obviously as the living room is the direct route Into the house it’s going to get some wear meaning carpets a bad idea. But i don’t think carpet in dining room is a good idea.

So what would do you put down?

Yabu - wooden/laminate flooring
Yanbu - carpet

Thanks all!

I have wooden/laminate floors throughout my entire downstairs. Hall/Lounge/dining and kitchen. Its nice to have the continuity. I would have wooden flooring if I was you. Maybe even laid in a more traditional pattern? Herringbone maybe?

I used to live in a house like this. I had carpet behind the second front door (there was a tiny porch). One night someone walked dog poo straight into the house. I’d really recommend that you have flooring which is easy to keep hygienic and clean. You can always have rugs over it.

Wood the whole way through. It looks cosy and is much harder wearing than carpet - looks better for longer.

How about LVT very hard wearing and long lasting, lots of different choice and feels nice under foot

LakieLady · 20/05/2021 21:19

There are some fantastic laminates now that really look like wood. My BIL uses a make called Quick Step on all the properties he refurbs for a developer client, and it looks great. You'd never know it's not real wood unless you got on your knees and really scrutinised it close up.

The client's properties are all rented out, and he reckons this stuff wears better than wood.

Engineered wood is cheaper than lvt and looks great plus wears really well. Find our your square footage and get quotes for all. Then go for the easiest to clean, warmest, cheapest in that order.

I’ve just changed my hall to tiles with underfloor heating. Carpets got filthy, and I mistakenly put in expensive Lino type floor which scratched badly and couldn’t be steam mopped. The tiles are so easy in comparison and the underfloor heating is a game changer.
