Caravan with a baby

Would you?
We have a toddler... and a six month old. Caravan is an old style one that someone has tarted up with some bunting and put on airbnb. No electric per se but a basic cooking system that I'm not sure how it works.
Baby is just starting solids but I still sterilise bottles.
What would you do?

I would.

HappyAsASandboy · 20/05/2021 11:58

I would take a baby on a caravan holiday; in fact I took my 12 week old away in our caravan last summer.

I would not go on a caravan holiday to someone else's caravan unless I knew it had everything I needed for the baby. For me, that would include a water supply and electricity and a heating system to keep warm at night! I'd also want a list of cooking appliances, pots, pans, bed arrangements, outdoor tables and chairs etc etc etc etc (so so many etc involved with caravaning with small children) so that I knew it wouldn't be harder work than necessary

It's not just water for the baby's bottles though it's heating and a cup of tea! I am not great at caravanning although we did it when DS was quite small. There must be something around that has electricity?

FortniteBoysMum · 20/05/2021 12:45

If your only worry is sterilising bottles cold water steriliser and a pack of Milton tablets is cheap. If there is more putting you off then your answer is don't do it.

I have a 7yo and an 8mo. Hell no!

Newestname001 · 20/05/2021 12:54

This thread reminds me of an Episode from "Father Ted" when the priests - including the one played by Graham Norton - all went on holiday and stayed in a tiny caravan all trying to keep themselves entertained by playing "I spy" and having a bit of a dance with about 2 inches of space each... 😂

PineappleWilson · 20/05/2021 13:21

Holidays with small children aren't holidays, they're your everyday life in a different location. I wouldn't do that with no electric, and old fashioned cupboards with sharp edges.

PigsEnigma · 20/05/2021 13:40

We would and in fact, we do regularly (or did before lockdown). In our own van. There must be some sort of power? Solar charged leisure battery? We started caravanning when DS was 6mths. He's now 4yrs and very hardy. We also now have 9mth DD. It's a faff with all the baby stuff but it's unbeatable family time. Pack wet gear, a baby carrier and go for it.

We camped without electricity last summer with a 1 and 4 year old (and 2 older ones) It was actually fine, we just used the bbq and a gas hot plate to cook and for cups of tea etc. I’d want decent washing facilities though!

This! And the complete lack of space would drive me mad. DD2 has been crawling since she was 6mo so would have hated the lack of space.
TheJackieWeaver · 20/05/2021 13:50

This is a kind of reverse isn’t it?
Your DH has booked it and you’re checking you’re not insane to think he’s made a huge mistake?!

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/05/2021 15:26

Caravans without electric usually have gas, and therefore gas lights.

NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie · 20/05/2021 18:17

Thanks everyone, it turned into a panic attack today and I think I've found an alternative. I really couldn't face a lack of space and difficulties with baby bottles etc. It's probably going to rain all weekend anyway so would have been extra grim.
And yes, I do need enough space when on holiday to perform the Riverdance without the accommodation falling over.

I almost think the baby aspect is irrelevant 😂 I wouldn't want to go on holiday with no electricity, how would I charge my phone?! I'd absolutely do a caravan holiday with a baby and a toddler (i did that several summers in a row as my mum owns a caravan and I was broke when the kids were small, she would stock it with food and everything! And we would have a wonderful time) but not without electricity.
